Crit results from july 21st (adjusted) [July 23, 2009] Once again, Mike LeBlanc and Jeff Currie showed they were the strongest riders in the greater Moncton area last night in the first of 3 criterium held at the Ecole Odyssée. They finished the event together ahead of the group. But under the Mike's Bike Shop Cup rules, mainly a developmental series, riders are handicapped according to their age and strenght. After calculations, Sussex's Neil Symington took the win and the 100 points. He was followed closeley by Justin Mallet and Mélanie Bordage, both of Moncton. On the general classification of the series after 7 weeks of racing (3 of mountain biking and 3 of time trialing), Symington now holds first place, tied with Craig Harper, both with 415 points. Justin Mallet (405 pts), Julien Roussel (385 pts) and Marc Evers (370 pts) complete the top five. Here are last night's results:

Way to go JR! [July 20, 2009] Long time Centre program cyclist and assistant coach, Jean-Richard Cormier won the Ontario criterium championship on Saturday in Ottawa. He was doing that race while getting ready for the Tour de Abitibi (part of the UCI Nations Cup) with the Louis Garneau team. In Atlantic Canada, he rides for the Mike’s Bike Shop Cycling Club. It was my idea to get into an early break, but I crashed very early into the race. After taking my free lap to fix my bike, I got into a four man break. I attacked them in the last lap and got a nice gap to win on the line! mentioned Cormier shortly after his victory. Here are the top four results: Junior Men - 41.6 km - Average Speed 44.3 km/h Subway BMX Racing on Wednesday, July 22nd [July 19, 2009] Hi all, hillsborough race [July 13, 2009] MBS cup, postponed for one week [July 13, 2009] message from Luc Arseneau : We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for the great work done from Thursday to Saturday on the Caisse populaire Dieppe Vélodrome. This was not easy work, but we managed to pull out almost 50 sheets of plywood from the surface of the track. Now comes the final task of replacing those holes with some new boards so we can welcome the cyclists once again. We would not want this task to wait for too long before we can see the final product. In fact, having the Velodrome exposed this way is not good in many ways. We are proposing on taking advantage of the window that Mother Nature is opening to us to host another volunteer work evening. The Mike’s Bike Shop Cup was supposed to be resuming tomorrow evening with the first of three criterium, but we recently discovered some construction of the usual course. Obviously, this will mean we will need to postpone tomorow's crit to next Tuesday. That being said, we would like to invite everyone to the Vélodrome to help us complete this important task tomorrow evening (Tuesday) from 6 pm. We will take advantage of this time to finalize the plan to put the track back together. Then, for the task ahead, we will need one or two people who are agile with a skill saw to cut the new boards, and teams of 3 (or 4) to install the boards. The more teams we have, the quicker the task will be done. Everyone present will get a bonus 50 points on the Mike’s Bike Shop Cup standings. There is work for everyone to do from cutting the board to picking up old screws to bringing water to the volunteers. Please dress accordingly as this is a construction site. The Caisse populaire Dieppe Vélodrome has been a community project from day one, and Dieppe has made many Canadian and American cities incredibly jealous. The cyclists own it, and the time has come to prove it once again. We thank you in advance for your great support! adjusted times are up for week 6 TT [July 1, 2009] TT times are up from tonight's race [June 30, 2009] here are tonight's results week 6 results Note: these results have not yet been modified with the handicap system. as soon as I get them I will post A big thanks to the all who came out despite the crappy weather, particularly the volunteers who helped out tonight. thanks a bunch guys! and remember, next week is off and then the crits start the week after! Get the event flyer here or go register online at the official registration site Mike LeBlanc - volunteer of the year!! [April 28, 2009] Mike LeBlanc, long time club member, was given the award of Volunteer of the year last Thursday night! This award was presented by The City of Dieppe and the Atlantic Cycling Centre. a well deserved award for all the hard work you've been putting into cycling Mike! Congrats! This message was sent last week from Luc Arsenea u of the Atlantic Cycling Centre last FridayLast night, the National Cycling Centre – Atlantic, in partnership with the City of Dieppe, was really happy to recognize its 2008-09 volunteer of the year; Mike LeBlanc. The annual ceremony took place last night at the Mathieu-Martin High school and no less then 37 volunteers from the community were recognized. n the past year, Mike was very active on many fronts to contribute to the development of cycling in the community. He was very active as a commissaire for the famous Pepsi Cup where he earns the respect of the more then 175 young participants. On a personal side, Mike was also incredibly active organizing a huge annual cycling fund raiser for Juvenile Diabetes; a cause very close to his heart. Most importantly, over the last 12 months, Mike rediscovered the passion that brought him to cycling in the first place: BMX. The task to activate BMX in a region where it was pretty much dead over the past 20 or 25 years is not an easy one, but Mike took it with a passion. Week after week, he would show up at the new Subway BMX Track to share his knowledge with the kids. The education process is certainly not an easy one when you start from scratch, but the first generation of the Subway Track is in good hands. They say many volunteer also take a lot of pleasure by offering their time, when we see Mike showing up at the Subway BMX track with such a smile on his face, there is no doubt, he’s there to also have some fun! So, that can only mean time to get ready for the upcoming cycling season! This year we will try to keep growing the sport of BMX with a more structured race program to accompany the Wednesday night coaching clinics that will begin after the Pepsi Cup in July. Here is the proposed / tentative Dieppe Subway BMX race schedule: Practice Race (prizes, but no points awarded) – Wednesday evening, July 22nd, 2009 Race 1 – Wednesday evening, August 5th, 2009 Race 2 – Atlantic BMX Open Saturday, August 15th, 2009 (double points) Race 3 – Wednesday evening, August 19th, 2009 Race 4 – Wednesday evening, September 2nd, 2009 Race 5 – Fall BMX Classic Saturday, September 26th, 2009 (double points) Race 6 – Subway BMX Series Finals Saturday, October 10th, 2009 (double points) Here is what I personally can commit to this year:
We have also been invited to an eastern series race in Crabtree, Quebec (near Montreal) on August 1st - 2nd weekend. We need to find out who would be interested in travelling to this race. At this point, I cannot commit 100% to be able to make the trip with the group yet. We'll work with the Atlantic Cycling Centre to try to plan something depending on the interest. If you’re able and willing to lend a hand with any of these tasks please send me a message and we’ll start getting the ball rolling… Thanks Mike LeBlanc you've been invited! Lacroix in Chamcook, NB, wins Cycling TV contest [January 19, 2009] proof the bike gods truly do exist! story told by the very lucky Gilles Lacroix: I have been a fan of Cycling TV (www.cycling.tv) for several years, but I am an even bigger fan now! While I was watching the Vuelta a Espana in September (in my home in Chamcook, near St Andrews, NB), of course I entered the Cycling TV contest to win a Ridley Excalibur bike. And then I did not think much more about it - until 13 November when I checked my e-mail, and there was one entitled “RIDLEY VUELTA COMPETITION.” The message read, “CONGRATULATIONS! You have won the Ridley Excalibur from Cycling TV’s Vuelta Espana 2008 Competition.” I could not believe it, but it was real! I had several e-mails and phone calls with Neal Vaughn (Cycling TV’s Sales Manager) – and it is indeed real! As I had planned to be in southern Spain for the winter, Ridley (www.Ridley-bikes.com) kindly agreed to send the bike to me in Spain – so on 31 December 2008, a new Ridley Excalibur arrived at my gate in Spain! What a way to bring in the New Year… and what a fabulous prize. The frame is all carbon and came equipped with carbon components, and Campy drivetrain and their new Khamsin G3 wheels. The whole package just looks great and is really sweet to ride. And because I have escaped the Canadian winter this year, I can ride to my heart’s content on glorious winding roads in the Spanish countryside and hills (instead of on the wind-trainer in my basement). Life is good! Here is a photo of me when the bike was delivered, and another of me and the bike. You can see for yourself that it is a beaut, and the ride is sooo sweet. So tune in to Cycling TV, and make sure you enter those contests – anything is possible! [October 29, 2008] ![]() Photo courtesy of Don Ricker With Mike LeBlanc and Derrick Keith tied in first place with one race to go, we certainly expected a great finish to the 2008 Mike's Bike Shop Cup. The evening was certainly warm for cross (+16), but the heavy rain and wind certainly made it look like a typical northern Europe cross race... with the exception of the Halloween costumes! One thing for sure, Melanie Bordage, still mathematically in the race for the top podium step, had no intention of letting the two leaders battle it out on there own. She rode the race of her life and took advantage of the handicap system to take the last of the 18 stages of the 2008 Tuesday night series. The question was on everyone's mind, would the 100 points awarded for the victory be enough to make it to the top? By the smallest margin ever, those 100 points were enough to take the series by 5 points! At the same time, Bordage became the first women to win the Mike's Bike Shop Cup. To win the series, she had to battle things out from May to October on cycling's 6 event series: cross country, time trials, criterium, track, BMX, and then cyclo-cross. The local series was once again a great success in 2008, and the best part of it is still to come. The profit raised throughout the summer will now be donated to a special charity on behalf of our winner. After her podium, she was so surprised of the outcome that she needed to wait to decide to which charity she would like to donate in the community. A later announcement will be made on that effect, and we will also announce the amount at that time. After the event, we also held out annual “skid” contest, and for the second year in a row, Jean-Richard Cormier took the win in that event. Various prizes were also offered by the organizers, but the one to note was the National Cycling Centre’s Head Coach award. Every year, the Centre’s Head Coach is given the chance to offer one, or more special award to riders of his choice. Like last year, the coach’s choice went to young riders who competed throughout the summer with the experience Tuesday night warriors. The selection ended on Marc Evers and Julien Roussel. Two local young riders who went through the Centre’s Peter Wedge Program and who now represents the future of cycling in our community. Here are the results of week 18: 1. Melanie Bordage 2. Mike’s Bike Shop Cup Week 12 results [August 20, 2008] For the third consecutive week 17 year old Jean Richard Cormier of Dieppe took the sprint win in the Mike’s Bike Shop Cup Criterium race. Undaunted by the heavy rain, Cormier put in an impressive showing as he rode 41 laps in 45 minutes and outsprinted a group of 7 riders for his victory. As always, once the commissaire applied the race handicap, the winner for the night was Zuzana Ecerova followed by the youngest rider in the group, 13 year old Julien Roussel in second and 14 year old Andre Hebert with third. Series leader Derrick Keith continues to hold his commanding lead with a total of 700 points. Second overall remains Mike Leblanc and an interesting tie for third has the young Jean Richard Cormier tied with his father Charles for third overall – Charles will have to appeal to the commissaire for a substantial handicap coming into the BMX portion of the series if he hopes to get ahead of his lad as the young Cormier is undefeated in BMX action on the Subway BMX track this year. The series takes a one week competition break next week but the Subway BMX track will be open for all series riders who wish to practice their BMX techniques as the following week the racing turns to BMX and many of the riders in the series have limited experience in cycling’s newest discipline. After 45 minutes of racing around the 1 km circuit the finish again came down to a sprint between two junior riders: Jean Richard Cormier and Denis Hebert with Cormier taking the win for the second week in a row. Once the handicap was applied the winner for the night was Melanie Bordage. Series leader Derrick Keith holds his series lead with 685 points with Mike Leblanc still chasing him at 485 points. With only one more criterium before the series moves to BMX. While Leblanc is an ace at BMX, Keith looks to be secure in his top spot as he has considerable motocross racing experience under his belt which should give him an edge in the BMX racing. The prologue, originally scheduled for the Caisse populaire Dieppe Velodrome had to be rescheduled for the road due to wet conditions on the velodrome. Fastest time for the day in the prologue went to 16 year old Stuart Wight riding for Mike’s Bike Shop Cycling Club. Prologue times were then used to seed the riders into two groups rather than the usual age and gender based race categories in an experimental grouping designed to make for more exciting racing. Aug 3 the two road groups started their 40 km race on the hilly Pre d’en Haut circuit. In the A group the winner of the day was Stuart Wight of Mike’s Bike Shop Cycling Club, followed in second place by Adam Douthwright of the Radical Edge Cycling Club and third place was taken by Jean Richard Cormier also riding for Mike’s Bike Shop Cycling Club. In the B group the race was won by another up and coming 16 year old – Ryan S MacDonald of Pictou County Cycling Club followed by Todd Mackenzie, independent rider from PEI and third place was taken by Jean Leger of the Mike’s Bike Shop Cycling Club. With the help of many many hands over many many hours we hit an absolute home run with this event. Thanks to the volunteers and all those who came out to participate! would not have been possible without all of you! As with all events the volunteers absolutely do make it possible. They donate of themselves so that other people can have a good experience (debateable the joy you can have over 5 hours of climbing on a mountain bike in the open sun baking ovens in hillsborough...). Because we were donating all of our profits to charity (exact amount reached to be posted as soon as we finalize our budget) we also reached out to our sponsors and friends for donations and prizes...and once again and with unbelievable generosity they came through. Their donations mean money goes directly to help find a cure. I specifically want to thank the following:

[June 2, 2008] "Every time I see an adult on a bicycle, I no longer despair for the future of the human race." - H.G. Wells Science has had a tremendous impact on the planet in an incredibly short time. In just the past few hundred of our 150,000 years on Earth, we have invented everything from steam engines, cars, and airplanes to sophisticated weapons and supercomputers. And the pace at which we keep inventing more complex and fascinating machines is increasing. Some of our inventions have been a great boon, some have been harmful, and some, such as cars, have turned out to be a mixed blessing. But one invention is so efficient, beneficial, and simple that it may be the best thing we’ve ever made. People across the land will celebrate that invention as we ride into June, Bike Month. The "modern" version of the bicycle with pedals and cranks was invented by French carriage-maker Ernest Michaux in 1861. It’s come a long way since then, but whether it’s a high-tech racing bike or a one-gear street cruiser, the bike is still a marvel of ingenuity. In fact, it may well be the most efficient form of transportation yet invented. The best part of the bike is that you, the rider, are the engine. The fuel is what you eat and drink. Putting the human engine together with the gears, wheels, and frame of a bike gives you a mode of transportation that uses less energy even than walking. As for our most popular method of getting around, the automobile, there’s no comparison. According to the WorldWatch Institute, a bicycle needs 35 calories per passenger mile, while a car uses 1,860. Buses and trains are somewhere in between. During Bike Month, it’s worth thinking about the potential this amazing invention offers. With oil prices climbing and environmental damage from car emissions increasing, bikes are becoming a more attractive form of urban transportation every day. Cleaner air, reduced congestion, safer streets, and lower noise levels are just a few of the benefits. As more people get out of their cars and onto their bikes, they’ll also become fitter, leading to lower health-care spending. The money that could be saved nationally on things like health care - not to mention the infrastructure required to keep so many cars on the road - reaches into the billions, but the money an individual can save on fuel, insurance, and maintenance costs alone is also substantial. And because biking is a lot of fun, it will probably increase what the people of Bhutan call "gross national happiness"! But we still have a ways to go. Canadians and Americans use bikes for fewer than one in a hundred trips - although in Vancouver where I live, it’s a bit higher, at about 2.3 per cent. Compare that to the 20 to 35 per cent of trips taken by bike in the European Union and 50 per cent in China. (Unfortunately, the trend is reversing in China as the country embraces car culture.) Shifting from car dependence will take action at the individual level, with more people simply deciding to get on their bikes, but governments must also do more to make it easier for people to ride bikes. And they can. In just three years, from 1998 to 2001, Mayor Enrique Peñalosa of Bogotá, Colombia, turned his city of 6.5 million from a gridlocked parking lot into a city where public spaces live up to their name. He did this by restricting car use, increasing gas taxes, and building hundreds of kilometres of bike and pedestrian paths, as well as investing in buses. Making our streets safer for cyclists by giving them space to ride is an essential first step. The investment required is far less than that required for infrastructure for cars. Tax breaks for cyclists also help. Last year in Ontario, Premier Dalton McGuinty removed the provincial sales tax on bike helmets and bikes costing less than $1,000. Bikes are also exempt from PST in B.C., and the province’s $100 carbon-tax rebate could be put toward buying a bike or tuning up your old bike. Employers can also help out by offering secure bike parking and showers for those who work up a sweat on the way to work. Of course, cycling isn’t a panacea. In parts of Canada, the weather isn’t always conducive to cycling. And not everyone has the strength to ride up the hills in some of our cities. But if more of us choose bikes whenever possible, using public transport or at least energy-efficient vehicles when we can’t ride, we’d all be much better off. So, get on your bike in June, and maybe you’ll like it enough to make it your preferred method of transportation year-round. taken from the David Suzuki website June 7th Mike’s Bike Shop Time Trial – 4 - Type 1 [May 26, 2008] Information regarding the TT in 2 weeks is now available Go to this page for all information Don Ricker on the T&T [May 22, 2008] Don Ricker made the news yesterday... and no, it's not in the Police Beat! you can see the article here Good job Don Mike’s Bike Shop Cup Week 3 results [May 21, 2008] After three weeks of time trials the overall lead in the Mike’s Bike Shop Cup has changed hands yet again. WINDY NIGHT FOR THE 2nd MIKE’S BIKE SHOP CUP RACE [May 14, 2008] The second night of racing in the Mike’s Bike Shop Cup Series was held Tuesday night with fierce winds awaiting the riders. The fastest time for the night was put in by Alain Goguen who posted a 25:21. As always though, once the handicap system was applied, Alain’s time was bumped to 28:39 dropping him to 13th place and the winner for the night was Conrad Belliveau with an adjusted time of 25:12. The Mike’s Bike Shop Cup is a series of weekly races held on Tuesdays nights at 6:30pm. The series also includes mountain bike cross country, criteriums, track, BMX and cyclocross events to be held later in the summer and fall. The overall winner of the series will pick a charitable organization to which a donation from the registration proceeds will be made. The next race will be held Tuesday May 20 and will be the final time trial for the series. The registration takes place on Aviation Ave in Dieppe at 6:10 with the first rider starting at 6:30. Races are open to anyone with a bike and a helmet and triathletes are especially welcome. The handicap system ensures that anyone has a chance to win. For the time trial races there is a handicap based on skill level as well as a one based on use of aerodynamic equipment. Results:

[May 13, 2008] Hey all – we want to get the BMX track ready to ride after the ravages of winter. What this means is manual labour. The track needs raking and reshaping and so we are hoping for a big turnout to ease the workload. In order to be ready for the programs we want to start soon we are asking as many as can put in an hour or two on the chain gang to come out on Wednesday May 21 at 6:30. Bring any rock rakes you might have, we could also use a couple of sturdy shovels and mostly a willingness to get an upper body workout. We are scheduling this during the Pepsi Cup as we want the riders in that series to see that we are getting the track ready for them. Logistically this means there will be lots of cars in the parking lot but once you get past the mob at the start area it will seem like peace and quiet down on the BMX track. With a good turnout we should be done in under two hours – leaving time for the time honoured reward of all manual labourers – cold beverages! Let me know if you can join the gang. The City of Dieppe has a program called "Tribute to Volunteers". [April 29, 2008] message from the Cycling Center Hey everyone – wow, my snow shovel is still at the front of the garage but believe it or not it’s time for racing! The first MBS Cup race is May 6. While we have traditionally started with the mountain bike races, the snow still on the single tracks in the park have led us to think time trials first. And so it begins. The first race in the series starts Tuesday May 6. Registration will be available from 6:00 PM at the parking area on Aviation Ave. near the airport. The first rider will depart at 6:30. The route is the same as last year but if you did not ride the TTs last year let me know and I will give you the full description. Basically you start at the airport exit ramp and turn right several times! If you find yourself in Sackville you missed a turn. On a personal note, I will not be able to do the timing for the TTs as I have a commitment with the Riverview Fire Department for Tuesdays in May and June. Sasha has kindly offered to do the mountain bike races in June for me but I am looking for a couple of volunteers to do the TTs. There is no easier race to officiate and I will teach you how to do it if you’re new to it. Let me know if you could find it in your heart to skip one race and wear the stripes (only figuratively). So here is the order of racing for the series:
Please pass the info on to anyone you know who might like to ride – as always it is $5.00 per night. Membership in a registered club or Velo NB is strongly recommended. [April 1, 2008] Most of us can only look at our bikes in the basement this spring...the idea of 3 , 4 hour rides is but a dream right now (and, no, rides in the slush and on your trainer don't count!) As it stands now we don't have enough jackets to make an order on those items. Only 3 have been ordered so far. a few more would have to be reserved in order to justify a jacket order please contact Jeff via email to place your order jeff.currie@rogers.com see news item below for ordering information Jersey order [March 23, 2008] The club is in preparation to order custom clothing.. We are committed to keeping last years red/white layout for the 2008 and 2009 season. The order takes about 8 weeks putting us around May 25 if we get things done quickly. We always start talking about it in February, but never seem to work on it soon enough. Thus, sorry for passing the "rush" on to you. I have recieved a quote from Garneau. I am surprised that the cost of goods has risen over last spring. This is for 2 reasons: Small price increases in product A smaller order (to get a price break of $5 per Jerseys, we need to order 31 units - we ordered 50 last year and got an even larger break per unit) For certain, we will order: Jerseys (men and women sizing). We must order minimum 24 units. Shorts (Bib and regular). Minimum 24 units. Optionally, if we get enough interest in: Jackets (min 12) Skin Suits (min 8) Kids Jerseys are highly unlikely (min 12). Here is some ballpark pricing for you to make your decisions: Jersey (men or women) - $85+tx Shorts (bib or regular) - $90+tx Jackets - $170+tx Skin Suit - $140+tx The tricky part is to order enough for everyone, but not have a lot left over. The club has some funds to tie up in inventory, but not a lot. Thus why I urge you to pre-order (and pay). This removes the risk from the club of being stuck with clothing. Getting stuck with Jackets and Skin suits is a real risk. We will order the most common sizes for the club inventory. Don't trust the my judgment on this, last year extras were estimated by me, but there was nowhere near enough. Many were disappointed, including me. For those that have emailed me, thank you. You will get an email "invoice" from me shortly confirming the estimated price and your requested size/selection. For the rest, please have your order to me by Thursday, March 27. I will respond with an "invoice", copying the shop. Please go to the shop and pay the amount. Rick will respond to the email me when you have paid closing the loop. If you do not pre-pay, I will not guarantee your selection. For selecting your size, there is a couple things you can do. Go to the shop and try on Garneau products. This is not always an exact science. Talk to people that have clothing. Here are some examples of sizes: Jeff Currie (6'1" - 180 lbs): Jacket - L Mens Jersey - L Bib Shorts (I find them short in the legs, but fit good) - XL Skin Suit (I find it too short in the body, but OK when on the bike) - L Mike Leblanc All Medium. Rhonda Currie (5'1") Womens Jersey (finds it too short) - M Regular Shorts (fit fine) - L Pictures of product can be seen link to pics (external site) Arm/leg warmers will be ordered soon to match our suits. I will get more details in the weeks to come. I doubt pre-ordering will be necessary as they will be a bulk purchase. Thanks. It will also be repeated Until Friday night Winter-cross / Cyclo-cross hivernal [February 11, 2008] from Luc A. Currie and Chase, masters of the snow The weather and the amount of snow were certainly different then the previous years, but some things stayed the same at the 3rd annual winter-cross championships: The rider’s enthusiasm, and the winner. On this sunny afternoon, the once almost icy course became really soft once the temperature increased more then 10 degrees to plus 3 in less then 4 hours. But Jeff Currie again proved no one could beat him in the snow. This year, the challenge came from a young talented rider, Ryan Belliveau. He led the race for three quarters of the race and was taken by Currie in the last minutes of the event. “I realized everyone was panicking with the course deteriorating due to the warm weather. I did everything to stay calm, and told myself it’s a bike race, and I’m going to ride my bike as much as possible to conserve energy while everyone is trying to run as fast as possible” said Currie after crossing the finish line. This strategy certainly paid off as he went from 7th place to catch every rider one by one. “When I finally saw Belliveau on the finishing stretch with a lap to go, I knew I had saved enough energy to get him on that lap.” On the women’s side, Michelle Chase took this year’s title on her brand new single speed bike. “It was a gamble to ride that bike, but with all the running I had to do in the soft snow, gears were no longer a major factor” mentioned the winner not too long after crossing the finish line. She was followed by Mélanie Bordage and Caroline Pellerin. The event once again attracted many curious spectators from the City of Dieppe Friendship Carnival. It was a perfect type of event to attract the photographers and media, including Don Ricker Photography. A special thanks goes to the St-Anselme Park staff (City of Dieppe) for the enormous help while building the course. Also thank you to Mike’s Bike Shop, Shimano and Giant who greatly contributes to the success of such event. Team H2V is back [December 10, 2007] Hi all, H2V Ride of a Lifetime book. See details below. $10 from each book sold goes to JDRF. Order your copy today! Also, stay tuned in the new year for details on the 2008 ride to Cure Juvenile Diabetes! Thanks... Mike Mike, Thought I’d get you of all people to check this out and see if you could pass on the good word. Expect more information from us but I wanted you on this so we can get N2V rolling. Tell the world. Team H2V is back! Hello everyone. I know it has been a while but rest assured, like you, we have all been busy continuing to keep Team H2V’s mission alive. Again we would like to thank you for your generous contributions to what we hope will be a lasting legacy like none other. If you didn’t hear yesterday, we wanted to tell you that we have come good on our threat of producing a book that speaks of the ride of a lifetime: Team H2V’s ride for Juvenile Diabetes. The book is called The Principles of the Ride: How to maximize what’s inside you. It is a coffee table book, keep sake and a book full of lessons on how anyone can do something extraordinary if they put their mind and energy into it. The plan was to create a book that would continue the legacy of Team H2V, as well as be a source of inspiration for young people and their families dealing with a debilitating illness like Juvenile Diabetes. Each of you in your own way lives this way. Trying to teach young people that they can indeed do anything that they apply themselves to. We are determined to leave the lasting legacy of others taking the torch and raising millions themselves for JDRF. This book has a forward by the man himself, Kyle Balagno, an introduction describing the ride, principles that one can take and apply based on what we all learned from the ride, a learning section on how to maximize what’s inside you, a conclusion, a brief introduction to the legacy of the 2008 and beyond rides [Newfoundland 2 Victoria], all the coolest blogs and their comments, and a great picture section in the middle. It truly is something we are proud of and not to beat a dead horse, you should be proud of as well...because each of you helped us reach our primary goals. The best part is that on behalf of Team H2V $10 from each book will be donated to JDRF......making a reality of the legacy beginning and continuing. So please take a look at the cover, tell your friends, tell the media, talk to your teacher, your boss, your employees, your aunt, uncle, son, daughter, girlfriend, boyfriend, wife etc. and tell them that they can do a little something for JDRF and themselves by just purchasing the book, The Principles of the Ride. They can do something for themselves by owning this book. Not just one, but one for the coffee shop barista, one for your church leader and one for the guy on the corner. It takes a lot to become the number one most talked about disease that needs a cure and this will get them talking and keep them talking. We are motivated to keep this great ride for our sponsors, friends and JDRF going. On top of just inspiring others through our words we also can provide a full presentation that lends itself well to sales training, teams building or can be tailored to what you need to help inspire greatness within your organization. Check it out here and please help us spread the word by passing on this link. We are taking PRE orders now and hope to deliver in early January. Please help us continue to grow the awareness of Type 1 and to increase the almost $900,000 raised so far. Kids from 5 to 18 years of age are invited to attend this new fun racing series for the next three weeks, the first edition of the NB Youth Cup. Racing will start at 12:30 and the track will be open from 10 am for practice. This series will take the same format as the well known Pepsi MTB Cup: Fun and participation oriented. Draw prizes will also be part of the game. “It’s been a long three years since we first talked about the possibility of reviving BMX in Dieppe and Atlantic Canada, but it’s now official, the opening ceremonies will take place on Saturday and the ribbon will be cut!” says National Cycling Centre’s president Guy Vincent. The Centre and especially the city worked real hard in the past months to get the track ready, but it now looks really good. “Everything is up to international standards, including the start gates. The city has been a great partner in the development of this facility, along with the government of New Brunswick and the Canadian Cycling Association” adds Vincent. The new facility is not officially opened yet, but it keeps attracting more and more riders, from all ages. For the fall season, the track is opened to the public on Thursday and Sunday evenings from 6 to 7:15 and Saturday mornings from 10 to 12 (this time slot will now be reserved to kids participating in the NB Youth Cup). Everyone is welcome. Regulations simply ask you wear full pants, long sleeves sweater and gloves, along with a full face helmet. We have a limited number of helmets and BMX to try out, but we also accept 24 inch wheel bikes. Everyone’s welcome to attend this Saturday’s first ever official race on this new facility. Kids looking to register (25$ for the series of 10$ per event) can simply contact the National Cycling Centre at 877-7809 or visit our web site at www.AtlanticCyclingCentre.com. In case of rain or wet track, the events will be re-scheduled to the week. Elgin results [October 11, 2007] you can see the results from Elgin here: results Humour: How to talk to non-cyclists [October 11, 2007] The fact that you are reading this tells me all I really need to know about you. You're a cyclist. I'm a cyclist. We therefore both know what's really important in life (riding). We see the world as it truly is (a place to ride our bikes). If we were each to answer the question, "What would you do with a million dollars?" our answers would vary perhaps in what equipment we'd buy and where we'd go to ride, but in little else. If we were to have a conversation, we'd have an understanding of how each other thinks. Maybe you're a Cat 2 roadie and maybe I'm a cross-country endurance geek, but we both know that turning the cranks in a perfect circle is the ultimate form of self-expression. Sadly, not everyone is like you and I. I am sad to say that there are people out there who rarely - if ever! - ride bikes at all. It's possible you even know someone like this. A coworker. A family member. You'd be surprised at how common non-cyclists are, actually. You probably encounter them several times per day and simply don't notice them, because they aren't interesting. Mostly, you can safely ignore these people, simply by riding away from them. Sometimes, though - at a company party, say - it is impossible to avoid non-cyclists. Surrounded, you have no choice but to communicate with them. Don't worry. I'm here to help. Just follow these five simple rules. Rule 1: Understand their bizarre world view You need to understand that non-cyclists don't realize that cycling is the most important thing any person can be doing at any given moment at any point in the universe. Non-cyclists' eyes - and minds - are shuttered, leaving them to believe that things like friends, community, work, and even family supercede what they naively call "just exercise." It's sad - OK, it's pathetic - but it's true. To appease non-cyclists, when asked about what matters to you, you must from time to time mention friends, family, the environment, or some other such nonsense. Otherwise, they'll never leave you alone and it will be hours until you can get away, back to the comfort and kinship you feel when with your bicycle. Rule 2. Use metaphors from "real life" Non-cyclists aren't ready to hear about your exquisite existence in its unadulterated perfection. No, you will need to translate the sublime cycling experience into terms they might be able to understand. Naturally, you and I know that the following metaphors don't do the actual cycling event justice, but they'll have to do. To describe how it feels to ride down perfectly banked, twisty forested singletrack on a cool autumn morning: "It's like that scene from Return of the Jedi where Luke and Leia are zooming on their flying motorcycle things. Except you're the one powering the flying motorcycle. And you're not being chased by stormtroopers. And you don't have to tolerate the constant chattering of Ewoks." To explain why you gladly get up at 4:30am each weekday morning to ride your road bike for three hours on an entirely unremarkable road: "You know how you have to drive your car in stop-and-go traffic to get to work every morning? Well, imagine if you didn't have to stop. And imagine your car going as fast as you can make it go. And imagine starting the day feeling perfect. It's kind of like that." To explain why you pay $200 to participate in a race you have very little chance in winning: "Ever play the lotto? It's like that, except much, much more so." Rule 3: Pretend to be interested in their life This one's going to knock you off your feet. Believe it or not, non-cyclists sometimes think they have something interesting to say, have an interesting hobby, or an interesting experience to relate. This, of course, is utter nonsense. Still, for the sake of propriety, you must act as if you care. Feel free, as they talk, to pleasantly daydream about biking. Just smile and say, "Absolutely," from time to time. Warning: It's entirely possible that a non-cyclist will say something with which you disagree. When this happens, do not engage. If you do, you will have unwittingly stepped into a non-cycling conversation, and who knows where that will lead, or when it will end. Always remember: Be polite, be brief, be gone. Rule 4. Act like their theory on doping in cycling is very interesting A tactic non-cyclists will often employ, once they have discovered you are a cyclist, is to try to talk with you about cycling. This usually takes the form of trying to talk with you about doping in cycling. You will, no doubt, be tempted to gouge your ears out rather than hear their simplistic, uninformed opinion ("Doping is bad") to its rambling, incoherent conclusion. After all, as a cyclist, you have no doubt been pummelled with story after story after story about doping. You have heard so much about doping that you could now be called as an expert witness at the next doping trial. Or open a lab. Or be the next president of WADA (and you're rightly confident you'd do a much better job). But if you point any of this out to your non-cyclist "friend," he will no doubt take that as a sign that you are interested in continuing the conversation. So, instead, repeat this simple phrase, "Yeah, doping sucks." Your friend will feel like he has made his point, whatever it was. Rule 5. Don't tell them the truth about how much your bike cost Few people ever own anything that works, fits, or looks as well as a truly well-built bike. And yet, when they find that your bike costs as much as their high-end computer or mid-range stereo, they will fake a heart attack, guaranteed. The solution? Tell non-cyclists you paid $499.99 for your bike, no matter how much you really paid for it. This number has been scientifically formulated to sound like more than a non-cyclist would pay for a bike, without otherwise drawing attention to itself. No matter how you try, you can't always avoid non-cyclists. All you can hope to do is minimize contact with them - so you can get back to what's important. And I think we both know what that is. Elden "Fatty" Nelson blogs as The Fat Cyclist, where he says ridiculous things about bikes, biking, and bikers on a daily basis. Oh, and sometimes he gives stuff away, too. Track Nationals were a hit thanks to all of you [September 11, 2007] great work all! A message from the Centre regarding this past weekend, Well, some 36 hours have past since the conclusion of the 2007 Tim Hortons National track championships, and the feeling gets more and more positive regarding the event. I’ve received many congratulations messages, and these are always welcomed when you’re as tired as I am at the moment. The only challenge I have, is the fact those messages should not come to me, but to all volunteers, officials, coaches, athletes, city workers, etc. who helped make this event a success. We have yet to cumulate all those hours worked by the volunteers, but I can already confirm they were priceless. Without the help of the volunteers, mainly from the Mike’s Bike Shop Club, it would be impossible for us to old such event. Some people even took days off work to come and help us in any way possible. To them, we say a huge THANK YOU! Thank you to our sponsors and partners as well. Without their support, the National Cycling Centre – Atlantic Canada would not exist, so needless to say their importance in regards to this event. A special thanks to the City and Park staff for helping us with the venue preparation and clean up. Their work too often goes without notice; this is how it happens when it’s well done! Finally, a great thank you to the athletes. They were the reason all the above mentioned worked so hard. The show you guys put on was awesome and you were seen as real professionals of the sport. From the staff of the National Cycling Centre and the Caisse populaire Dieppe Vélodrome, thank you and hope to see you all in the future, Luc, Craig, Sheila, Sacha and Andrew. [July 10, 2007] As you can see , I’ve updated the look of the site. I’ve also changed some of the functionality.. removed some dead links, etc. One notable and very important change is to the RIDES forum. Now, when you post , you will be given a unique ID that you must use in order to edit your post after you have submitted. If you submit a post and made a mistake in one of the fields you can now edit that ride via the EDIT the ride link. (Provided you have the edit ID for that ride) I ask that you please use this feature and NOT re-post as that creates too many unwanted emails to all members, Another addition is the next race section visible from the main page. I’ve put in a database all the know events for 2007. the 3 more recent events will show up in that window. I may have forgotten certain events… I’ll get it right for 2008 ;) The next section below it is the race reports . these reports are tales from some of our members regarding particular events they have gone to. If you wish to contribute to these reports, please email me at th following address Pablo@mbscycling.org and I’ll do my best to post it on. I chose not to create a forum style for that section since I fear it would end filled with a lot of junk.. this way I can “edit” the reports if needed. As you navigate through the new site, if you see any strange things, errors, or simply things that don’t make sense, please contact me so that I can make the changes to the site Hope you enjoy the new layout and functionality Pablo Pablo@mbscycling.org First Crit, next week [July 5, 2007] Tuesday July 10th will be the first criterium of the Mike's Bike Shop Cup cycling series. Check them out: pics from their trip Sheila Colbourne as Technical Director [July 3, 2007] (from Luc Arseneau, Head Coach of National Cycling Centre) National Cycling Centre – Atlantic Canada and Velo NB combine efforts to name Sheila Colbourne as Technical Director
Dieppe, NB (July 3rd, 2007) – It is with great pleasure the National Cycling Centre – Atlantic Canada announces Sheila Colbourne as its Technical Director. The creation of this position is due to the partnership with Velo NB. Sheila has a great background in the world of cycling and fits the two organizations’ philosophy very well. “The Centre’s getting bigger and bigger every year and it’s important to have someone to take care of its administration and event management. By combining with our provincial organization, Velo NB, it enabled us both to create this full time position with the necessary benefits to get someone of Sheila’s quality;” comments Luc Arseneau, the Centre’s Head Coach. Sheila Colbourne’s background in cycling is a very positive one. Along the years, she represented her home province, Newfoundland, at the Canada Games, she was chair of Bicycle Nova Scotia, and also worked as Technical Director with the Ontario Cycling Association. For Velo NB, her experience will also be of major benefit: “Sheila has been active on the Atlantic cycling scene for some time. Her enthusiasm and professional qualifications and this partnership with the Centre promise great things for cycling in Atlantic Canada,” comments Kelly Murray, newly appointed chair of the association. Stu looks cool but I can tell he’s nervous. My nerves are twitching for him – I’ve left enough skin cells on Quebec roads for my own episode of CSI so my heart is in my mouth thinking about all the possibilities. After a pile of instructions in French the announcer counts them down and there’re off. Unlike the casual pace of a road start we have here they are off like they’ve been hit by a cattle prod. Stu has to scramble to get up in the top third of the peloton. They are doing five laps of a pretty flat course – one small climb near the end of the lap. On the second lap a big lad from the Louis Garneau team takes off and Stu decides to jump in – the two of them shake off the couple of others who also joined the initial break and they manage to stay away for most of the lap before the bunch decides to reel them in. Stu spends the rest of the race getting used to riding in such a big peloton. He gets pushed off onto the sandy shoulder a couple of times but manages to get back on pavement after a bit. Knowing he has no field sprinting experience he makes a go of a break on the last hill but alas those Quebec lads are not having any of that and he is swallowed up and spit out the back at the finish. He ends up 25th just off the bunch finish time. I’m pleased for him – he stayed in the whole race, was active and competitive and got the respect of a number of the riders. He’s ticked about not finishing in the bunch but I’m happy he still has all his body parts attached. We pack up and head out for food and rest. The next day, the TT is early so we are up with the dawn – Stu is looking tired but is looking forward to the TT – at least he knows what he’s doing in a TT. He rides hard and it’s done. In Quebec the results are up within ten minutes of the last rider in so by the time the bike is on the rack and Stu’s changed we can see how it all came out – 5th place – I am ecstatic – the four riders ahead of him are the top four in the province! This vaults him up to eighth overall on the GC. Next up is the crit. We drive down to the site right after the TT since I’m not sure where we are going or if the site is accessible once the earlier races start. The back of the car looks like some sort of lycra bomb has gone off and there are socks strewn everywhere. Stu is starting to look like one of those kids you might hold a telethon for! I make him eat and he goes through four water bottles but he still doesn’t look good. As his race time approaches he starts to feel better but the fatigue is plain to see on his face. This ain’t no picnic that’s for sure. The TT performance stands him well for the crit start as they call the first 15 on GC to the line first – it’s cool to see him there in the first group. He looks even tinier but never mind, Charlie Gaul was no heavyweight either. Instructions are given and they’re off and again, no time is wasted getting comfy. The crit course is wild, there is a short steep climb just before the second corner and they hammer it hard every lap. The hill burns three or four off each lap. Stu handles the hill well but the pace and the cornering are taking their toll. After about 15 minutes he is off the back and chasing – I’m hollering to get back on but I can see he won’t be able to – they just keep hammering with assorted guys trying to get off the front and the bunch reeling each one in. At about thirty minutes in, I lie and tell him the pack is slowing down, just to keep his spirits up. He’s in a little chase group but only he and one other guy seem to even care so they are doing all the pulling. I’m down to just trying to be encouraging – mostly I’m not sure I even want to watch anymore. After 45 minutes they post two laps to go and I’m so relieved. The next lap we hear the sweetest sound in the cycling world – the bell. Watching the sprint makes me glad Stu’s not in there – picture a dozen teenaged boys hurtling at you at full tilt, you’ll see why the mother in me is glad he’s in the chase bunch. He and his little group also have a good sprint and Stu manages to beat them all at the line to take 16th in the crit. I thought he looked bad before the crit but now he really looks bad – I hand him a couple of bottles of water which he drains and we go find some shade. Stu being Stu he goes to thank the commissaries and organizer and then we go back to the car to pack up. All in all it was a fabulous experience – Stuart learned a ton and can’t wait to go back for more. He’s so tired his eyelashes hurt but while pleased to have finished 13th overall he wants to do better and he wants to come back for more. The club directors I spoke with were very impressed with him as were the commissaries. We got home late the next day both exhausted (I felt like I’d ridden every stage) but happy. Next stop the Tour de L’avenir in Saguenay Lac St. Jean in July. Saint John Road race results [June 25, 2007] the Saint john Raod Race Results are available here . Tuesday night race [June 18, 2007] this week will see yet another TT Meeting at the centre for 6:30 for those who want to ride to the course together. Race starts 6:50. same course as lkast week (by the airport) thanks Sacha Race report from the Wenthworth DH (RJ 's report) [June 14, 2007] This past weekend was round 2 of the NSNB Gravity Series. The Mike’s Bike Shop crew was in beautiful Wentworth Valley for fun times…riding and some pre race antics. We loaded up the ginourmous Chevy full size van early Saturday morning with coolers, tools, bikes lots of beer and four amigos (Brendan, Josh, Frank and me). We got to the hill noonish ready for our first shuttle runs. This year’s race course was Grassy Switchbacks. The top of the hill is somewhat rocky and it gradually turns into mossy…grassy terrain as the trail goes down. There was nothing particularly gnarly about this course, but it still was hard to keep the bikes on path. As Josh said it best: loose cannon! The roots and soft moss made it hard to stay on course around the many flat turns. After a few runs on the trail we decided to get eaten alive by the black flies. Oh my god was there ever lots of those things! Actually we scoped out the trail to see what the best lines were for the following day’s race. As soon as we got down the hill we were off to the hostel and some much needed carbs! When the day turned into night it was time for some good ol cowboy TV. After a few brewskies things started to get interesting…I should tell you more, but nah. You had to be there to really enjoy it! Race day Sunday rolled along. We had two mandatory runs to do. For the most part they were uneventful, except for my flat on my second run. When the first race run came along things weren’t going as planned. My run was ok but, I slid out near the end of the course. Meanwhile Brendan crashed early on, Josh had three minor crashes and Frank had a so so run. Run #2 was better for Brendan, Josh and Frank. Josh got third, Frank was a very close 4th only ten tenths away and Brendan won the Senior Sport category. As for me well let’s say my first run was better! As a side note over sixty riders were out ripping it up on each day. DH is definitely healthy in the Maritimes! Our next race is July 14th and 15th at Poley. That is sure to be a blast! I would like to thank John Devona from Read’s Newstand for letting us use the full size van. We had a pro setup and lots of people dropped by to chill with us...cool! A big thank you also to Mike’s Bike Shop for the tent and of course without the helps of organizers like Connor Scalion and Mark McKay and their crew of volunteers, events like this would not happen. Props to you guys! Happy trails RJ Last night's TT sees Ian Denis as the winner! [June 13, 2007] Tuesday night, the first road race of the Mike’s Bike Shop Cup, a time trail was held in Dieppe. That number doubles last year’s attendance. Then again, Noah had called and told us to book a spot on the ark. The 70 mm of rain we got last year for the Sunday ride was indeed “biblical” . For this weekend, nothing but sunshine and warm temperatures were in the forecast. Saturday the dirt girls headed for Hillsborough, lead by Krista and Sherry, to hit some amazing new single track. From what I heard, the woo-hoo’s can still be heard echoing through the woods. At the same time, I lead the roadies on a 55 km ride out to Memramcook/Belliveau Village/Pre d’en Haut area. This was fully supported with Don in the wagon handing out “fuel” and taking pictures along the way. For a pit stop we stopped at Belliveau Orchard where we sampled the fruits of their labour. The road ride ended with some of us jumping, in full bike gear, into Carol’s pool. The dirt girls on the other hand, or at least one of them, decided that a pond in Hillsborough would be just as nice for a après ride dip. I don’t think the frogs minded though. Sunday morning we were met with partly cloudy skies. We actually welcomed the cooler temperatures for the long ride ahead. This route took us from Salisbury /Havelock/ Petitcodiac/ Cornhill/Anagance/Elgin area. Once again we had a full team car and like a good support crew, Don and Guy anticipated our needs before we did. Smartie shots and gummie fruit were the order of the day. Not to mention a shared can of Coke that was equivalent to a vintage wine. Its funny how you eat whatever is handed to you on a 117 km ride. It was a long day in the saddle, but worth it in the end. There is inspiration in looking back and seeing a peleton of 14 women rolling through the countryside. Some have never done that kind of mileage before, others it’s the first one of the season. Every level of athlete was represented on that ride. We had seasoned veterans who encouraged the newer riders. The newer riders themselves were inspiring with their grit and determination. We ended the weekend with a BBQ and plans were already being discussed for next year. In the end, thanks to our sponsors, support crew and fabulous weather, the weekend was a huge success. See you next year, girls! Got there at 8:40, leaving fredericton the sun was out...by woolastook it was cloudy and jacket wearing cold. Just prior to the start the sun came out, armwarmers got put away and a general happiness was everywhere. Jeff and Sean and Christian were representing Mikes in the SoLOW category, while Chris Selkirk and I considered ourselves a bit smarter/wimpier and went into the Team competition as Team 27:1. The big contenders in the solo category was jeff, martin pelltier, a young kid from Cyclesmith and andrew from fredericton. In the team "competition" (funny word considering) it was Matt Hadley and His other 135lb pro contract partner from the Yukon. Matt was going to ride for 2.5hrs while his partner fed him on the laps, then they'd switch. The lineup was down by the entrance to the park on the paved road. Riders came up and past the feed zone, then after the wooden station turned left and hard left again (not down by the now underwater beaver dam mud bog area...more on this later) The course was in amazing condition and the only bit of wetness occurred in the first minute of racing but it didn't amount in any accumulation or problems. The organizers made the course about 85% singletrack, 14% double track and a tiny bit of pave towards the finishline. it was 8 k long but personally it felt shorter when riding it. Since Chris had gears i made him start. To be honest its really enjoyable to race as a team. the race was on, and even though i was a part of it...i went and sat quietly and contendedly in a lawn chair. Fantastic! It wasn't long, at all, about 27min or so, until mr hadley came ripping though the start line. yikes. Shortly after the top solo riders came around as well. the pace was obviously high. a bit later i saw chris turn the corner and rip up over the start line to hand off to me. Sweet. It was very unstressful really. I started with no other riders around me so the blistering MTB start wasn't there. However i made the first turn...the proceeded to turn right instead of left. saw the beaver dam road flooded...and stopped. a quick scan of the field showed me an arrow pointing the opposite direction. whoops. Back on course i immediatly started passing people, i thought i was off course or had taken a shortcut, but no. i was on a 1 lap rythym while the solo dudes were on a 5hr rythm. pretty fun from my perspective to be passing people so often and quickly (no wonder Hadley smiles so much....) The new course that had been laid out was great. lots of surprisingly tight turns, challenging root combinations, and a good number of flowing fast trails. on my bike the entire course was rideable aside from the long grindy uphill just after the technical downhill. I started the race running 32:16 gearing and found it nearly perfect, just a bit high for some of the climbs where i'd come over the top of them doing about all i could do to turn the pedals, in the flowy singletrack it allowed me an excellent cadence. My first lap was just over 30min, i was very pleased with that. and equally pleased with tagging off with chris and a chance to sit down for a bit. Its funny 'racing with a partner', the reality is you see them less than any other person the entire day. The soloists kept chugging through. each lap looking a bit more haggared. jeff came by for the start of his 3rd lap, stopped and had some pasta and a pear. he was looking a bit tired but he always looks like that in racing when he's on good form. Peter Rowan and Mike were partners on another team, so i got to sit beside Peter for most of the day. It was great to see so many people out there who weren't angry they weren't in first place. people just out to challenge their own abilities and ride with a friend. the vibe was more social then competitve and people were actually smiling. Hey VELO NB....Welcome to the Future of Mountain bike competition. Laps came and went. my goal was not to try to win but to remain consistent each lap. Sort of doing a TT every time. it worked well. i had 10 and 20minute marker on the trail to me know if i was on schedule. After my second lap i switched from running 32:16 to 32:19 to see if the lower gearing would allow me to ride faster overall (even though obviously slower on the flats). I haven't downloaded my watch yet but i believe i was 30 min and change for the first lap, 33min, 32 min and 34 minutes for the last lap. the last lap i was a bit concerned that i could have gotten to the start finish just barely inside the cutoff ..and personally i could have, but didn't want to, do an additional lap, so i purposefully took it a bit easier. chris was a bit oddly delayed on the end of his 4th lap, jeff had just come by and yelled at me that he was coming..so i went to the start finish and stood...and waited...and waited. then a rider came by and said "some rider is in the woods on the ground with leg cramps", i asked "big guy with a red/blue jersey on?", rider said "yup". Dam! a medic was sent down to find him. a few minutes later chris comes around the corner riding...but not looking too happy. Gotta hate those debilitating leg hyperextending quad cramps eh? finished my last lap and that was that. Immediatly after that the beer came out, and shortly after, and in timely fashion the awards ceremony was held. they started with the Team comp, and to my serious surprise, Team 27:1, with 8 laps completed, got third place (and a medal). Second place team did 9 laps i think. and first place, team 138lbs, did 12 or so. Solo category. jeff currie with 8 long solo laps, got 3rd place. kid from Cyclesmith with 9 laps, took second. martian pelliter took it solidly with ten strong laps. andrew was in the hunt but a flat tire and some bad luck took him out of the top 3 race. Lots of draw prizes was a nice bonus. HOWEVER (and i shouldn't complain but i gotta) can the organizers please stop going to the basement of the bike shops, finding the oldest and dustiest steel beaded tires and most obsolete parts to hand out at the race?! I know the shop wants to get rid of stuff...but seriously. Old orange and black semislick steel beaded tires...no racers going to use those. I recieved an easton EA60 stem, probably from 1992. 1" steerer, 26.8 bar size, and 130mm long. But i spose those parts are more useful than NB Power ballcaps and towels.... The organizers and volunteers did a fine job with the course, marshalling and flagging. they made a few mistakes with other parts such as no available water for racers on site, no toilets that worked (that got nasty), no food available for free or to buy, no music or any other sense of "fun". These aren't hard things to do, and are fairly important to the overall sense of the event. Those complaints being said; if they hold it again next year i'll be there. Infact...i think i'll be at a lot more endurance events. thanks for reading don update to the BOB weekend schedule [June 4, 2007] Check out the updated schedule for the BOB weekend: updated schedule A road ride has been added on Saturday for those who don't want to do the dirt ride. Jean-Richard Cormier captures week 2 [May 30, 2007] Once again, a young rider took the stage during the second week of the Mike’s Bike Shop Cup. The race was won by Dieppe’s Jean-Richard Cormier. Jean-Richard has been part of the Centre’s programs such as Sprockids, Junior Track League, Pepsi Cup, etc. since the beginning. Mike Leblanc and Jeff Currie sprinted to the line for second and third respectively. Cormier and LeBlanc are now tied for the series lead, each with 180 points but Cormier will get to wear the Leader’s Jersey next week as he was the stage winner. Next week, because of the handicap system, Cormier will move up to a higher category and will have to fight even harder to defend his lead. The Mike’s Bike Shop Cup is a series of local races held every Tuesday night at 6:30. Following 3 weeks of mountain biking, we will be hosting some road (time trials and criteriums), track, BMX as well as cyclocross events. Registration is 5$ a week with a portion of all registration fees going to a charity (will be chosen by the overall winner of the series). Many draw prizes are available every week. This series is open to cyclists 15 years of age or older. All levels of abilities are welcome as we have a handicap system to even out the field. pics from last night's mtb race [May 30, 2007] Bob weekend coming up [May 30, 2007] ![]() The women's BOB weekend is coming up. not this weekend but the next! (June 8th and 9th). For registration details simply go here race report (Michael LeBlanc) [May 28, 2007] This is what Mike remmbered from the SJ race yesterday: Beautiful day, sunny, light winds and like 17 degrees. Course was very dry, same course as last year. Real fun, fire road and long sections of technical, rocky singletrack. 9 elites - me, Brian McKeown, Shaughn Smith, Derek LeBlanc, Remi Parent, Andrew Arsenault, Jonathan Daigle, Tim Clarke and some dude from Cyclesmith. Brian McKeown stood up at the start and sprinted all the way up the first hill, he just sat down after the feed zone and already had a huge gap by that point. He won easily. I briefly rode with Shaughn Smith and Andrew Arsenault. I was sketchy on the first lap in the singletrack not always riding the fastest lines. Jonathan Daigle passed me in the first lap and I passed him back at the beginning of lap 2. I then rode in 4th position til the end. I figured out how to ride the single track better by lap 2. So, elite results were: Brian M, Andrew Arsenault (he's riding strong) , Shaughn Smith, me, Remi Parent and I'm not sure after that. Other MBS results as best as I can remember... Jean-Richard Cormier - 1st under 17 expert Stuart Wight - 2nd under 17 expert Charles Cormier - 2nd 40+ expert Patrice Boudreau - 3rd 40+ expert Chris Selkirk - 2nd or 3rd Master Sport Alain Goguen - 1st Expert Sean Ritchie - 3rd Expert Luc Belliveau - 2nd or 3rd Senior Sport Melanie - 1st Women Sport (I think) Don Ricker - dnf (broken bike) Michelle Chase - dnf (crash - she's OK) RJ - dns Tim Clarke - dnf (flatted and C02 didn't work) Good job guys and gals ! Michael LeBlanc pics from the SJ race this weekend [May 28, 2007] some pics from Sunday's race available clik here to see First stage of mtb for the Mike's cup [May 23, 2007] The first stage of the mountain biking portion of the Mike’s Bike Shop Cup cycling series was held Tuesday night at the Dieppe St-Anselme Park. Young Stuart Wight of Hillsborough took the leader’s jersey followed closely by Dieppe’s Mike Leblanc and Jean-Richard Cormier. Next week, because of the handicap system, Wight will move up to a higher category and will have to fight even harder to defend his lead. For the last three years, we developed a handicap system to have everyone sitting on the same start line with an equal chance to win. So far, this formula has been a success. The calculation is a little different for the various disciplines. For mountain biking, for example, we have the riders ranked A, B, C, or D (and A+ for the Centre’s Giant Elite riders). The A riders get their actual time, as the B’s get a 10% deduction, the C’s 20%, and the D’s get 30% (and the A+ get a 5% penalty). [May 10, 2007] as some of you may know, Jeff, Ronda, Don and Michelle are in Italy on a bike tour! needless to say the riding looks spectacular. if you're curious to see how the other half lives, here are some links to the trip they're on. photo link 1 photo link 2 race report (Michael LeBlanc) [May 7, 2007] NOTE - This race report is just what I could remember from yesterday. Time gaps are likely not 100% accurate and with my oxygen-deprived mental capacity, it is very probable that I forgot or screwed up certain details. Well it wasn't as nice as climbing mountains in Italy, but a very good day nonetheless… Cold drizzle when I left Dieppe, sunny when I got to Fred. Went up to 14 degrees I think, very light winds. There were like 12 Master Ex riders. Me, Paul Goobie, Francois Gazanno, Charles Cormier, Derek LeBlanc, Mark Mosher, OSB guys, Hub cycle guys and other dudes that I didn't really know. Apparently some of the Fred guys are in Europe (Andrew Arsenault and Heidi King…) so they weren't at the race. Fast elite dudes were Matt Hadley, Brian Mckeown, Terry Tomlin, Lorenzo Caterini, Shaughn Smith, Mike Davis, Jeff Sparkes and some other dudes. Alain Goguen was racing Open for Mike's Bike Shop. TT - TT course was different from years past. Rolling up and down with 1 or 2 decent little climbs. 5.5k out and back, 11k total. 30 second gaps, so you could see people which was motivating. Paul easily won masters, 45 sec faster than Mark Mosher in second. Charles was 10 sec slower than Mosher and I was 4th, 2 or 3 sec behind Charles. Francois was 5th, Derek 8th I think. Elites were - Matt Hadley 1st (amazing on an old Cannondale road bike with no aero bars), Tomlin 2nd (2 seconds behind) and Mckeown 5th. I don't remember the other elite results. Stuart Wight from Mike's Bike Shop had a smokin' fast time and beat alot of the Open Elite guys. Amazing that he's just 15 and riding with junior gears !! Remember us when you're pro, Stuart... Road Race - They sent us Masters with the elites, ouch ! Start was like a mountain bike race. Tomlin attacked immediately and the whole pack just blew up on the first hill. It was mere survival at that point. At the top of the hill, the pack was 4 or 5 elites in the break. Me and 4 other masters (Paul, Mark Mosher, Francois and some OSB dude) were in the second pack with like 6 elites (Mike Davis, Jeff Sparkes, Joe Ewing, Martin Pelletier and some other guys). Our pack caught the break at the end of lap 1, but they attacked again immediately and it broke up again. The masters did not want to work to catch the break cause we had no guys in it, so we just rode after that. Our pack stayed together til the end. Our race ended in a sprint finish. Mosher timed it perfectly and beat me in the sprint easily, I was second, Paul third and Francois 4th. So, Masters gc was 1st - Paul, 2nd - Mosher and 3rd - me, Francois - 4th. Good day for Mike's team riders 1, 3 and 4. Elites finished in a sprint between Hadley, Tomlin, Mckeown and Lorenzo Catarini. Not sure who won. Dan Leger from Dieppe won Master Sport. 1st road race ever. Michael LeBlanc Ron Leblanc - volunteer of the year! [April 23, 2007] One of our long time club member, Ron Leblanc, gets recognized with this year's volunteer of the year award presented by the Atlantic Cycling Center. Ron has always been a very helpful member of our club throughout the years and we are very happy that he got this award! Way to go Ron!The following is the press release sent out by Luc Arsenault: Last night, the National Cycling Centre – Atlantic Canada took advantage of the City of Dieppe volunteer recognition evening to highlight the great work of Ron LeBlanc. Ron was one of the important pieces of the successes of the organization of the National Track Championship held from September 7 to 10. As infield manager, he constantly made sure nothing was missing for the officials, athletes and coaches. During the whole week, he was the first to arrive, and the last to leave the Centre; pushing it as far as bringing in his camper in St-Anselme Park! Since year one, Ron as always be available to help the Centre and it is with great pleasure we named him our 2006-07 Volunteer of the year! We would also like to take advantage of the National Volunteer Week to thank all our volunteers without whom our Centre would not be the success it is today. Thank you! Merci! VeloNB plaques and medals at the shop [November 7, 2006] Jeff dropped off the plaques/medals from VeloNB for the club members who finished in the top 3 in their categories They are at the shop, please pick them up Val Cormier Award for our Club!! [November 7, 2006] The Mikes Bike Shop Cycling Club was awarded the prestigious Val Cormier Award during Velo NB’s Annual General Meeting that took place October 29th. This award is given each year to the group, member or coach that has contributed the most to the cycling in NB throughout the past year. This is the second time the Mikes Bike Shop Cycling Club has received the award, last time in 2004 when the club hosted the National Cyclocross Championships, two Provincial Level Races and held many cycling clinics in their region. When asked, Pablo Vergara (Cycling Club President) acknowledged that this award is more a representation of the region as a whole. “Dieppe, is a vibrant cycling community and partners with our club whenever possible. Without their help, our club could not achieve this honor. Our main sponsor, Mikes Bike Shop supports us throughout the long cycling season, and lastly, without the mentorship and partnering of Luc Arseneau and Andrew Scott of the Atlantic Cycling Center we would not be so successful. Volunteering in a fully supported atmosphere like this gives our club great pleasure. We are proud of the fact that our provincial peers recognize these collective efforts…..we must also highlight the many volunteers that have helped us out in the past, from cyclist to parents to spouses, this award would not have been possible without their help. Volunteers are a critical part of any event we hold, without them it would become impossible to hold such successful events. Hats off to all who helped us out in growing cycling in our area !” The Club is looking forward to the 2007 season is looking forward to yet another strong year of activities in our cycling community!. The 2007 club activity schedule will be revealed in a few weeks during the club’s AGM (to be announced later). The main focus is for the group to compile the necessary information for the city to prepare to build this “Dirt Jump” park in Centennial Park. They are fairly fixed already on the design, but are open to other ideas. For example, a trials park that would sit adjacent to this. This is an informal recreational Road Time Trial training event that will meet and finish at Mikes Bike Shop in Dieppe. The goal of this series is to offer cyclists an opportunity to improve their time trailing ability on a standardized course. This will provide a similar atmosphere to both road and triathlon events. It is also an excellent opportunity to train to develop power and stamina at a high threshold. The proposed 17km (approx) course consists primarily of long consistent flat sections on the first 2/3 of the course and a rolling finish that concludes on an exciting fast downhill. It has only right turns and is designed to minimize traffic issues and maximize safety. This is not a competition; it is designed as a training tool to allow riders to monitor their progress and fitness throughout the racing season. As such it will involve no prizes or awards. This is about finding and improving on your own Personal Best (PB). Both time trial and Standard Road bicycles are welcome. Following the return to the shop (to write your PB time on the board) there will often be a 1 hour recovery ride in and around Dieppe. Start: Mikes Bike Shop Time: 6:30pm Cost: Free. On a positive note...the weekend is looking great as of know!! Small problem with the rides forum [April 8, 2006] Some of may have noticed we are getting crap inserted in some of our rides. The text in it looks like this: Òµ´ÓÊÂʱÉЕþÊÎÔÚÏß .... These messages are inserted by "bots". These automated little guys go around and insert themselves in forums like ours... You’ll notice that deep in the message content there's a link to a web site. Goes without saying but DON'T click on it. Aside from that the rides forum works so feel free to use. There is no problem aside form the annoyance of having to skip past those messages. I’m working on a solution to weed those messages out. Should not be too long can't reach the shop? The deadline for the early Bird is April 1st! you can get the form at the following link: velo newsletter Press release for the cross race [February 19, 2006] from Luc Arseneau: “Well, when in the Maritimes, if you don’t like the weather, wait a few minutes.” Such was the case this week. In a matter of 5 days, we went from a snow storm, to major rain, to +14 degrees and to –24 degrees (the last two changes within 18 hours!). The problem, the –24 degrees (with the wind chill factor), by far, the coldest day of the winter, happened to be at the middle of the 1st Winter Cross Championship… Only in the Maritimes. Only in the Maritimes though will you find 19 cyclist to actually go ahead with the event! Indeed, 19 strong still showed up for the event. At a certain point, I was sure the organizers would have to cancel no questions asked. But a few hours before the race, everybody started to show up and there was no way you’d turn them around and send them home. The strong (and cold) winds would in no way slow down their determination. “We decided in October we’d do this event (regardless of the weather), and I’m gonna race it” said Mike’s Bike Shop rider Don Ricker. So after a lot of work by city workers and the organizing committee, the course was ready to go. The sudden weather changes forced the organizers to make a few last minute modifications to the course, but the event proved to be a lot of fun for everyone… the main goal of the day. A few pictures of the event can be seen at photo link Here are the complete results of the event: 1.Jeff Currie 2.Jos Ewings 3.Pablo Vergara 4.Mike LeBlanc 5.Andre Charlebois 6.René Julien 7.Patrice Boudreau 8.Don Ricker 9.Luc Arseneau 10.Franck LeBlanc 11.Carl Ripley 12.Marc Boudreau 13.Chris Selkirk 14.Jordan Smith 15.Richard McFadden 16.Tony Wallace 17.Michelle Chasse 18.Dan Shortal 19.Sean Rictchie Special thanks to the supporters of the event: Mike’s Bike Shop National Cycling Centre – Atlantic Canada City of Dieppe (and the Friendship Winter Carnival) Red Bull Wanderlust Outfitters Hub City Paint and Supply it's on!
