bmx tonight
[August 26, 2008]
So far, tonight's BMX session is still on. The track is so dry that even a bit of rain won't hurt it and we'll still be able to ride, so unless it's a downpour at 6pm, the ride is still on.

Mike’s Bike Shop Cup Week 12 results
[August 20, 2008]
For the third consecutive week 17 year old Jean Richard Cormier of Dieppe took the sprint win in the Mike’s Bike Shop Cup Criterium race. Undaunted by the heavy rain, Cormier put in an impressive showing as he rode 41 laps in 45 minutes and outsprinted a group of 7 riders for his victory. As always, once the commissaire applied the race handicap, the winner for the night was Zuzana Ecerova followed by the youngest rider in the group, 13 year old Julien Roussel in second and 14 year old Andre Hebert with third.

Series leader Derrick Keith continues to hold his commanding lead with a total of 700 points. Second overall remains Mike Leblanc and an interesting tie for third has the young Jean Richard Cormier tied with his father Charles for third overall – Charles will have to appeal to the commissaire for a substantial handicap coming into the BMX portion of the series if he hopes to get ahead of his lad as the young Cormier is undefeated in BMX action on the Subway BMX track this year.

The series takes a one week competition break next week but the Subway BMX track will be open for all series riders who wish to practice their BMX techniques as the following week the racing turns to BMX and many of the riders in the series have limited experience in cycling’s newest discipline.

The Mike’s Bike Shop Cup is a series of weekly races held on Tuesdays nights at 6:30pm. The series also includes BMX and cyclocross events to be held later in the summer and fall. The overall winner of the series will pick a charitable organization to which a donation from the registration proceeds will be made.

Mike’s Bike Shop Cup Week 11 results
[August 13, 2008]
The Mike’s Bike Shop Cup series held the second criterium race of the series on Tuesday in Moncton. After 45 minutes of racing around the 1 km circuit the finish again came down to a sprint between two junior riders: Jean Richard Cormier and Denis Hebert with Cormier taking the win for the second week in a row. Once the handicap was applied the winner for the night was Melanie Bordage. Series leader Derrick Keith holds his series lead with 685 points with Mike Leblanc still chasing him at 485 points. With only one more criterium before the series moves to BMX. While Leblanc is an ace at BMX, Keith looks to be secure in his top spot as he has considerable motocross racing experience under his belt which should give him an edge in the BMX racing.

The series continues with the last of three criterium races on August 19. Race details and directions are available on the Atlantic Cycling Centre website. Go to www.AtlanticCyclingCentre.com for more information.

Speed Warp Cycling – race results
[August 4, 2008]
Mike’s Bike Shop Cycling Club and the Atlantic Cycling Centre, Dieppe co-hosted the Speed Warp Prologue and Road Race on Aug 2-3. The prologue, originally scheduled for the Caisse populaire Dieppe Velodrome had to be rescheduled for the road due to wet conditions on the velodrome. Fastest time for the day in the prologue went to 16 year old Stuart Wight riding for Mike’s Bike Shop Cycling Club. Prologue times were then used to seed the riders into two groups rather than the usual age and gender based race categories in an experimental grouping designed to make for more exciting racing.

Aug 3 the two road groups started their 40 km race on the hilly Pre d’en Haut circuit. In the A group the winner of the day was Stuart Wight of Mike’s Bike Shop Cycling Club, followed in second place by Adam Douthwright of the Radical Edge Cycling Club and third place was taken by Jean Richard Cormier also riding for Mike’s Bike Shop Cycling Club. In the B group the race was won by another up and coming 16 year old – Ryan S MacDonald of Pictou County Cycling Club followed by Todd Mackenzie, independent rider from PEI and third place was taken by Jean Leger of the Mike’s Bike Shop Cycling Club.
Atlantic Open BMX Championships

In Category B the winner was Luc Comeau of Porter’s Lake, NS followed in second place by Ian Myatt of Musquodobit Harbour, NS Third place went to Odette Comeau also of Porter’s Lake, NS

In the C category the winner was Dieppe’s Jean Richard Cormier, followed by Ryan S MacDonald of Greenhill, NS and third place going to Ben Green of Saint John, NB.

warp speed weekend!
[July 24, 2008]
AS many of you know, Warp speed weekend is coming up . It will happen on August 2nd and 3rd. There will be BMX, stage road race and track!

The stage race will include the prologue on Saturday and the road race on Sunday.

The prologue is only 2000m (individual pursuit) on the track. We will use these times to classify the riders into the new category system (CAT A, CAT B, CAT C, etc)
All riders who participate in the prologue will be entered in a draw to win a 300$ gift certificate from Mike's Bike Shop! you have to race the prologue in order to be part of this draw

If you are unable to participate in the prologue you will be assigned the worst time + 15 seconds and the commissar will assign you a category based on your current VeloBN category and skill level

The road race will be more of a circuit race. 40k for all categories (if we get real young riders register we may ad a second distance to better fit that category).

the BMX race will be for anyone under the age of 17

The Caisse populaire Dieppe Vélodrome will be hosting the 5th Atlantic Open Championships
on August 2nd and 3rd, 2008. This year, the event will be split in two parts: the Individual
pursuit on Saturday and the pack events on Sunday. On Saturday evening, we will host timed
events, not counting for the omnium. For those who never raced on a velodrome, a Track 101
(mandatory) course will be held on Saturday morning.

For more info on this event and all the track racing going on at the same time, check out the flyer

hope to see you all out there for a fun weekend of racing!

thanks Don!
Thanks for making our event a success!
[July 15, 2008]
Sitting here two days after the Hillsborough 5 Hour race i can't help but feel lucky. With the help of many many hands over many many hours we hit an absolute home run with this event.

Thanks to the volunteers and all those who came out to participate! would not have been possible without all of you!

As with all events the volunteers absolutely do make it possible. They donate of themselves so that other people can have a good experience (debateable the joy you can have over 5 hours of climbing on a mountain bike in the open sun baking ovens in hillsborough...).

Because we were donating all of our profits to charity (exact amount reached to be posted as soon as we finalize our budget) we also reached out to our sponsors and friends for donations and prizes...and once again and with unbelievable generosity they came through. Their donations mean money goes directly to help find a cure.

I specifically want to thank the following:

  • Mikes Bike Shop

  • Giant Bicycles

  • Yakima

  • Shimano

  • Oakley

  • Redbull

  • Wanderlust Outfitters

  • Kona Bicycles

  • Little Ceasers Pizza

  • St John Ambulance

  • Outdoor Elements

  • The Coffee Can

  • Incline Sports

  • The Hillsborough Golf Club

  • The Village of Hillsborough

  • C103 Radio

  • Apple a Day

We had a great day, and a great bunch of friends to ride with. It was my pleasure to help host this event...and we're going to do it again in 09. See you all at the H5.5!

TT- 4-Type 1 .... thank you for taking part!
[June 13, 2008]

I personally want to thank everyone who showed to either race or volunteer at our TT - 4 - Type 1 event last Saturday, June 7th. A challenging course and beautiful weather conditions made for a fun and very competitive event. I would also like to give a big thumbs up to all the aerodynamically challenged who still came out to race and support our very important cause. The objective was to have fun and raise a bit of money and I we managed to reach these objectives.

My family and all others living with Type 1 Diabetes thank you very much !

Next up, the Hillsborough 5 MTB endurance event for JDRF... Hope to see you there on July 13th. It's gonna ROCK!

[June 2, 2008]
"Every time I see an adult on a bicycle, I no longer despair for the future of the human race." - H.G. Wells

Science has had a tremendous impact on the planet in an incredibly short time. In just the past few hundred of our 150,000 years on Earth, we have invented everything from steam engines, cars, and airplanes to sophisticated weapons and supercomputers. And the pace at which we keep inventing more complex and fascinating machines is increasing. Some of our inventions have been a great boon, some have been harmful, and some, such as cars, have turned out to be a mixed blessing.

But one invention is so efficient, beneficial, and simple that it may be the best thing we’ve ever made. People across the land will celebrate that invention as we ride into June, Bike Month. The "modern" version of the bicycle with pedals and cranks was invented by French carriage-maker Ernest Michaux in 1861. It’s come a long way since then, but whether it’s a high-tech racing bike or a one-gear street cruiser, the bike is still a marvel of ingenuity. In fact, it may well be the most efficient form of transportation yet invented.

The best part of the bike is that you, the rider, are the engine. The fuel is what you eat and drink. Putting the human engine together with the gears, wheels, and frame of a bike gives you a mode of transportation that uses less energy even than walking. As for our most popular method of getting around, the automobile, there’s no comparison. According to the WorldWatch Institute, a bicycle needs 35 calories per passenger mile, while a car uses 1,860. Buses and trains are somewhere in between.

During Bike Month, it’s worth thinking about the potential this amazing invention offers. With oil prices climbing and environmental damage from car emissions increasing, bikes are becoming a more attractive form of urban transportation every day. Cleaner air, reduced congestion, safer streets, and lower noise levels are just a few of the benefits. As more people get out of their cars and onto their bikes, they’ll also become fitter, leading to lower health-care spending. The money that could be saved nationally on things like health care - not to mention the infrastructure required to keep so many cars on the road - reaches into the billions, but the money an individual can save on fuel, insurance, and maintenance costs alone is also substantial. And because biking is a lot of fun, it will probably increase what the people of Bhutan call "gross national happiness"!

But we still have a ways to go. Canadians and Americans use bikes for fewer than one in a hundred trips - although in Vancouver where I live, it’s a bit higher, at about 2.3 per cent. Compare that to the 20 to 35 per cent of trips taken by bike in the European Union and 50 per cent in China. (Unfortunately, the trend is reversing in China as the country embraces car culture.)

Shifting from car dependence will take action at the individual level, with more people simply deciding to get on their bikes, but governments must also do more to make it easier for people to ride bikes. And they can. In just three years, from 1998 to 2001, Mayor Enrique Peñalosa of Bogotá, Colombia, turned his city of 6.5 million from a gridlocked parking lot into a city where public spaces live up to their name. He did this by restricting car use, increasing gas taxes, and building hundreds of kilometres of bike and pedestrian paths, as well as investing in buses.

Making our streets safer for cyclists by giving them space to ride is an essential first step. The investment required is far less than that required for infrastructure for cars. Tax breaks for cyclists also help. Last year in Ontario, Premier Dalton McGuinty removed the provincial sales tax on bike helmets and bikes costing less than $1,000. Bikes are also exempt from PST in B.C., and the province’s $100 carbon-tax rebate could be put toward buying a bike or tuning up your old bike.

Employers can also help out by offering secure bike parking and showers for those who work up a sweat on the way to work.

Of course, cycling isn’t a panacea. In parts of Canada, the weather isn’t always conducive to cycling. And not everyone has the strength to ride up the hills in some of our cities. But if more of us choose bikes whenever possible, using public transport or at least energy-efficient vehicles when we can’t ride, we’d all be much better off.

So, get on your bike in June, and maybe you’ll like it enough to make it your preferred method of transportation year-round.

Mike’s Bike Shop Cup Week 3 results
[May 21, 2008]
After three weeks of time trials the overall lead in the Mike’s Bike Shop Cup has changed hands yet again. The new overall leader is newcomer Derrick Keith. The final time trial race saw Paul Goobie post the best time at 24:43 but the winner of the night once the handicap was applied was Ian Denis of Sackville. A total of 19 riders came out to face the windy 17 km course.

The Mike’s Bike Shop Cup is a series of weekly races held on Tuesdays nights at 6:30pm. The series also includes mountain bike cross country, criteriums, track, BMX and cyclocross events to be held later in the summer and fall. The overall winner of the series will pick a charitable organization to which a donation from the registration proceeds will be made.

The series will now take a one week break and then shift to Mountain Bike racing in the Rotary Park in St. Anselme on June 3 at 6:30 PM. Registration will take place at 6:00 PM at the Atlantic Cycling Centre.

WINDY NIGHT FOR THE 2nd MIKE’S BIKE SHOP CUP RACE
[May 14, 2008]
The second night of racing in the Mike’s Bike Shop Cup Series was held Tuesday night with fierce winds awaiting the riders. The fastest time for the night was put in by Alain Goguen who posted a 25:21. As always though, once the handicap system was applied, Alain’s time was bumped to 28:39 dropping him to 13th place and the winner for the night was Conrad Belliveau with an adjusted time of 25:12.

The next race will be held Tuesday May 20 and will be the final time trial for the series. The registration takes place on Aviation Ave in Dieppe at 6:10 with the first rider starting at 6:30. Races are open to anyone with a bike and a helmet and triathletes are especially welcome. The handicap system ensures that anyone has a chance to win. For the time trial races there is a handicap based on skill level as well as a one based on use of aerodynamic equipment.

let's get the BMX track ready for action!
[May 13, 2008]
Hey all – we want to get the BMX track ready to ride after the ravages of winter. What this means is manual labour. The track needs raking and reshaping and so we are hoping for a big turnout to ease the workload. In order to be ready for the programs we want to start soon we are asking as many as can put in an hour or two on the chain gang to come out on Wednesday May 21 at 6:30. Bring any rock rakes you might have, we could also use a couple of sturdy shovels and mostly a willingness to get an upper body workout. We are scheduling this during the Pepsi Cup as we want the riders in that series to see that we are getting the track ready for them. Logistically this means there will be lots of cars in the parking lot but once you get past the mob at the start area it will seem like peace and quiet down on the BMX track. With a good turnout we should be done in under two hours – leaving time for the time honoured reward of all manual labourers – cold beverages!

Let me know if you can join the gang. Thanks

mbs cup set to begin next week!
[April 29, 2008]
message from the Cycling Center

Hey everyone – wow, my snow shovel is still at the front of the garage but believe it or not it’s time for racing! The first MBS Cup race is May 6. While we have traditionally started with the mountain bike races, the snow still on the single tracks in the park have led us to think time trials first. And so it begins. The first race in the series starts Tuesday May 6. Registration will be available from 6:00 PM at the parking area on Aviation Ave. near the airport. The first rider will depart at 6:30. The route is the same as last year but if you did not ride the TTs last year let me know and I will give you the full description. Basically you start at the airport exit ramp and turn right several times! If you find yourself in Sackville you missed a turn.

On a personal note, I will not be able to do the timing for the TTs as I have a commitment with the Riverview Fire Department for Tuesdays in May and June. Sasha has kindly offered to do the mountain bike races in June for me but I am looking for a couple of volunteers to do the TTs. There is no easier race to officiate and I will teach you how to do it if you’re new to it. Let me know if you could find it in your heart to skip one race and wear the stripes (only figuratively).

So here is the order of racing for the series:

  • May 6, 13 & 20 – TT

  • June 3, 10, & 17 – mountain bike

  • July 8, 15, 22 – track

  • Aug 5, 12 & 19 – criterium

  • Sept 9, 16 & 23 – BMX

  • Oct 14, 21 & 28 – cyclocross

Please pass the info on to anyone you know who might like to ride – as always it is $5.00 per night. Membership in a registered club or Velo NB is strongly recommended.

Most of us can only look at our bikes in the basement this spring...the idea of 3 , 4 hour rides is but a dream right now (and, no, rides in the slush and on your trainer don't count!)

Jeff, kissed the snow good bye and headed off to Ashville North Carolina with a bunch from Fredericton to enjoy milder temps and amazing routes (although the first couple of days have been on the cold side as you can tell from the pics)
since most of us won't be doing any 3 hour road rides this week, we can at least enjoy Jeff's trip via all the pics and videos.

deadline for clothing extended
[March 28, 2008]
We have extended the deadline for clothing orders until next Friday (April 4th) as we are still a little short on some items.

As it stands now we don't have enough jackets to make an order on those items. Only 3 have been ordered so far. a few more would have to be reserved in order to justify a jacket order

please contact Jeff via email to place your order jeff.currie@rogers.com

see news item below for ordering information
Jersey order
[March 23, 2008]
The club is in preparation to order custom clothing.. We are committed to keeping last years red/white layout for the 2008 and 2009 season. The order takes about 8 weeks putting us around May 25 if we get things done quickly. We always start talking about it in February, but never seem to work on it soon enough. Thus, sorry for passing the "rush" on to you.

I have recieved a quote from Garneau. I am surprised that the cost of goods has risen over last spring. This is for 2 reasons:
Small price increases in product
A smaller order (to get a price break of $5 per Jerseys, we need to order 31 units - we ordered 50 last year and got an even larger break per unit)

For certain, we will order:
Jerseys (men and women sizing). We must order minimum 24 units.
Shorts (Bib and regular). Minimum 24 units.

Optionally, if we get enough interest in:
Jackets (min 12)
Skin Suits (min 8)
Kids Jerseys are highly unlikely (min 12).

Here is some ballpark pricing for you to make your decisions:
Jersey (men or women) - $85+tx
Shorts (bib or regular) - $90+tx
Jackets - $170+tx
Skin Suit - $140+tx

The tricky part is to order enough for everyone, but not have a lot left over. The club has some funds to tie up in inventory, but not a lot. Thus why I urge you to pre-order (and pay). This removes the risk from the club of being stuck with clothing. Getting stuck with Jackets and Skin suits is a real risk. We will order the most common sizes for the club inventory. Don't trust the my judgment on this, last year extras were estimated by me, but there was nowhere near enough. Many were disappointed, including me.

For those that have emailed me, thank you. You will get an email "invoice" from me shortly confirming the estimated price and your requested size/selection. For the rest, please have your order to me by Thursday, March 27. I will respond with an "invoice", copying the shop. Please go to the shop and pay the amount. Rick will respond to the email me when you have paid closing the loop. If you do not pre-pay, I will not guarantee your selection.

For selecting your size, there is a couple things you can do. Go to the shop and try on Garneau products. This is not always an exact science. Talk to people that have clothing. Here are some examples of sizes:
Jeff Currie (6'1" - 180 lbs):
Jacket - L
Mens Jersey - L
Bib Shorts (I find them short in the legs, but fit good) - XL
Skin Suit (I find it too short in the body, but OK when on the bike) - L

Mike Leblanc
All Medium.

Rhonda Currie (5'1")
Womens Jersey (finds it too short) - M
Regular Shorts (fit fine) - L

Pictures of product can be seen link to pics (external site)

Arm/leg warmers will be ordered soon to match our suits. I will get more details in the weeks to come. I doubt pre-ordering will be necessary as they will be a bulk purchase.

Thanks. Jeff.

Rides forum fixed
[March 19, 2008]
Hi all
just a note to let you know that the rides forum has been fixed. for a while now the email notification was not working... finally found the time to investigate...found the little bugger causing all the trouble...
so the next time someone posts a ride you should be notified

if you notice any strange behavior with the forum( (or any other part of the site) please let me know...
you can email me at info@mbscycling.org

basic rides forum rules
[March 19, 2008]
now that the forum works again and is able to send notifications I ask that you please follow some basic rules when using the forum

the intent of the forum is mainly to post upcoming rides or events (cycling related) ...it's not intended as a chat forum...so please don't use it to comment on posts. it's simply or post a ride/event that you want to start

If you need to edit your post please do not re-post with changes, you can edit existing post providing you have your edit id . if you lost it, I can email it back to you...

we haven't had too many issues with this so far but last year I noticed the trend beginning.

If we don't respect some basic rules the forum ends up sending too many notifications and people ask to taken off the distribution list...that defeats the purpose of the forum.

thanks for understanding

Pablo

Currie and Chase, masters of the snow

The weather and the amount of snow were certainly different then the previous years, but some things stayed the same at the 3rd annual winter-cross championships: The rider’s enthusiasm, and the winner. On this sunny afternoon, the once almost icy course became really soft once the temperature increased more then 10 degrees to plus 3 in less then 4 hours. But Jeff Currie again proved no one could beat him in the snow.

This year, the challenge came from a young talented rider, Ryan Belliveau. He led the race for three quarters of the race and was taken by Currie in the last minutes of the event. “I realized everyone was panicking with the course deteriorating due to the warm weather. I did everything to stay calm, and told myself it’s a bike race, and I’m going to ride my bike as much as possible to conserve energy while everyone is trying to run as fast as possible” said Currie after crossing the finish line.

This strategy certainly paid off as he went from 7th place to catch every rider one by one. “When I finally saw Belliveau on the finishing stretch with a lap to go, I knew I had saved enough energy to get him on that lap.”

On the women’s side, Michelle Chase took this year’s title on her brand new single speed bike. “It was a gamble to ride that bike, but with all the running I had to do in the soft snow, gears were no longer a major factor” mentioned the winner not too long after crossing the finish line. She was followed by Mélanie Bordage and Caroline Pellerin.

The event once again attracted many curious spectators from the City of Dieppe Friendship Carnival. It was a perfect type of event to attract the photographers and media, including Don Ricker Photography.

A special thanks goes to the St-Anselme Park staff (City of Dieppe) for the enormous help while building the course. Also thank you to Mike’s Bike Shop, Shimano and Giant who greatly contributes to the success of such event.

Team H2V is back
[December 10, 2007]
Hi all,

H2V Ride of a Lifetime book. See details below. $10 from each book sold goes to JDRF. Order your copy today!

Also, stay tuned in the new year for details on the 2008 ride to Cure Juvenile Diabetes!

Thanks...
Mike

Mike,
Thought I’d get you of all people to check this out and see if you could pass on the good word. Expect more information from us but I wanted you on this so we can get N2V rolling. Tell the world.

Team H2V is back!

Hello everyone. I know it has been a while but rest assured, like you, we have all been busy continuing to keep Team H2V’s mission alive.
Again we would like to thank you for your generous contributions to what we hope will be a lasting legacy like none other.

If you didn’t hear yesterday, we wanted to tell you that we have come good on our threat of producing a book that speaks of the ride of a lifetime: Team H2V’s ride for Juvenile Diabetes.

The book is called The Principles of the Ride: How to maximize what’s inside you. It is a coffee table book, keep sake and a book full of lessons on how anyone can do something extraordinary if they put their mind and energy into it.

The plan was to create a book that would continue the legacy of Team H2V, as well as be a source of inspiration for young people and their families dealing with a debilitating illness like Juvenile Diabetes. Each of you in your own way lives this way. Trying to teach young people that they can indeed do anything that they apply themselves to. We are determined to leave the lasting legacy of others taking the torch and raising millions themselves for JDRF.

This book has a forward by the man himself, Kyle Balagno, an introduction describing the ride, principles that one can take and apply based on what we all learned from the ride, a learning section on how to maximize what’s inside you, a conclusion, a brief introduction to the legacy of the 2008 and beyond rides [Newfoundland 2 Victoria], all the coolest blogs and their comments, and a great picture section in the middle. It truly is something we are proud of and not to beat a dead horse, you should be proud of as well...because each of you helped us reach our primary goals.

The best part is that on behalf of Team H2V $10 from each book will be donated to JDRF......making a reality of the legacy beginning and continuing.

So please take a look at the cover, tell your friends, tell the media, talk to your teacher, your boss, your employees, your aunt, uncle, son, daughter, girlfriend, boyfriend, wife etc. and tell them that they can do a little something for JDRF and themselves by just purchasing the book, The Principles of the Ride. They can do something for themselves by owning this book.

Not just one, but one for the coffee shop barista, one for your church leader and one for the guy on the corner. It takes a lot to become the number one most talked about disease that needs a cure and this will get them talking and keep them talking.

We are motivated to keep this great ride for our sponsors, friends and JDRF going. On top of just inspiring others through our words we also can provide a full presentation that lends itself well to sales training, teams building or can be tailored to what you need to help inspire greatness within your organization. Check it out here and please help us spread the word by passing on this link. We are taking PRE orders now and hope to deliver in early January. Please help us continue to grow the awareness of Type 1 and to increase the almost $900,000 raised so far.

Thank everyone and have a great Christmas season.
We appreciate your time and thoughts for those with Juvenile Diabetes and if anyone needs us to speak to their organization please contact us at the numbers below.
Live to ride.

BMX revives in Dieppe
[October 11, 2007]
It’s been close to 20 years, if not 25, but BMX is back in Dieppe and this weekend will mark the official start for a new generation of cyclists. Kids from 5 to 18 years of age are invited to attend this new fun racing series for the next three weeks, the first edition of the NB Youth Cup. Racing will start at 12:30 and the track will be open from 10 am for practice. This series will take the same format as the well known Pepsi MTB Cup: Fun and participation oriented. Draw prizes will also be part of the game.

“It’s been a long three years since we first talked about the possibility of reviving BMX in Dieppe and Atlantic Canada, but it’s now official, the opening ceremonies will take place on Saturday and the ribbon will be cut!” says National Cycling Centre’s president Guy Vincent. The Centre and especially the city worked real hard in the past months to get the track ready, but it now looks really good. “Everything is up to international standards, including the start gates. The city has been a great partner in the development of this facility, along with the government of New Brunswick and the Canadian Cycling Association” adds Vincent.

The new facility is not officially opened yet, but it keeps attracting more and more riders, from all ages. For the fall season, the track is opened to the public on Thursday and Sunday evenings from 6 to 7:15 and Saturday mornings from 10 to 12 (this time slot will now be reserved to kids participating in the NB Youth Cup). Everyone is welcome. Regulations simply ask you wear full pants, long sleeves sweater and gloves, along with a full face helmet. We have a limited number of helmets and BMX to try out, but we also accept 24 inch wheel bikes.

Everyone’s welcome to attend this Saturday’s first ever official race on this new facility. Kids looking to register (25$ for the series of 10$ per event) can simply contact the National Cycling Centre at 877-7809 or visit our web site at www.AtlanticCyclingCentre.com. In case of rain or wet track, the events will be re-scheduled to the week.

Humour: How to talk to non-cyclists
[October 11, 2007]
The fact that you are reading this tells me all I really need to know about you. You're a cyclist. I'm a cyclist. We therefore both know what's really important in life (riding). We see the world as it truly is (a place to ride our bikes). If we were each to answer the question, "What would you do with a million dollars?" our answers would vary perhaps in what equipment we'd buy and where we'd go to ride, but in little else.

If we were to have a conversation, we'd have an understanding of how each other thinks. Maybe you're a Cat 2 roadie and maybe I'm a cross-country endurance geek, but we both know that turning the cranks in a perfect circle is the ultimate form of self-expression.

Sadly, not everyone is like you and I. I am sad to say that there are people out there who rarely - if ever! - ride bikes at all. It's possible you even know someone like this. A coworker. A family member. You'd be surprised at how common non-cyclists are, actually. You probably encounter them several times per day and simply don't notice them, because they aren't interesting.

Mostly, you can safely ignore these people, simply by riding away from them. Sometimes, though - at a company party, say - it is impossible to avoid non-cyclists. Surrounded, you have no choice but to communicate with them.

Don't worry. I'm here to help. Just follow these five simple rules.

Rule 1: Understand their bizarre world view

You need to understand that non-cyclists don't realize that cycling is the most important thing any person can be doing at any given moment at any point in the universe. Non-cyclists' eyes - and minds - are shuttered, leaving them to believe that things like friends, community, work, and even family supercede what they naively call "just exercise." It's sad - OK, it's pathetic - but it's true.

To appease non-cyclists, when asked about what matters to you, you must from time to time mention friends, family, the environment, or some other such nonsense. Otherwise, they'll never leave you alone and it will be hours until you can get away, back to the comfort and kinship you feel when with your bicycle.

Rule 2. Use metaphors from "real life"

Non-cyclists aren't ready to hear about your exquisite existence in its unadulterated perfection. No, you will need to translate the sublime cycling experience into terms they might be able to understand. Naturally, you and I know that the following metaphors don't do the actual cycling event justice, but they'll have to do.

To describe how it feels to ride down perfectly banked, twisty forested singletrack on a cool autumn morning: "It's like that scene from Return of the Jedi where Luke and Leia are zooming on their flying motorcycle things. Except you're the one powering the flying motorcycle. And you're not being chased by stormtroopers. And you don't have to tolerate the constant chattering of Ewoks."
To explain why you gladly get up at 4:30am each weekday morning to ride your road bike for three hours on an entirely unremarkable road: "You know how you have to drive your car in stop-and-go traffic to get to work every morning? Well, imagine if you didn't have to stop. And imagine your car going as fast as you can make it go. And imagine starting the day feeling perfect. It's kind of like that."
To explain why you pay $200 to participate in a race you have very little chance in winning: "Ever play the lotto? It's like that, except much, much more so."
Rule 3: Pretend to be interested in their life

This one's going to knock you off your feet. Believe it or not, non-cyclists sometimes think they have something interesting to say, have an interesting hobby, or an interesting experience to relate.

This, of course, is utter nonsense.

Still, for the sake of propriety, you must act as if you care. Feel free, as they talk, to pleasantly daydream about biking. Just smile and say, "Absolutely," from time to time.

Warning: It's entirely possible that a non-cyclist will say something with which you disagree. When this happens, do not engage. If you do, you will have unwittingly stepped into a non-cycling conversation, and who knows where that will lead, or when it will end.

Always remember: Be polite, be brief, be gone.

Rule 4. Act like their theory on doping in cycling is very interesting

A tactic non-cyclists will often employ, once they have discovered you are a cyclist, is to try to talk with you about cycling. This usually takes the form of trying to talk with you about doping in cycling.

You will, no doubt, be tempted to gouge your ears out rather than hear their simplistic, uninformed opinion ("Doping is bad") to its rambling, incoherent conclusion. After all, as a cyclist, you have no doubt been pummelled with story after story after story about doping. You have heard so much about doping that you could now be called as an expert witness at the next doping trial. Or open a lab. Or be the next president of WADA (and you're rightly confident you'd do a much better job).

But if you point any of this out to your non-cyclist "friend," he will no doubt take that as a sign that you are interested in continuing the conversation. So, instead, repeat this simple phrase, "Yeah, doping sucks."

Your friend will feel like he has made his point, whatever it was.

Rule 5. Don't tell them the truth about how much your bike cost

Few people ever own anything that works, fits, or looks as well as a truly well-built bike. And yet, when they find that your bike costs as much as their high-end computer or mid-range stereo, they will fake a heart attack, guaranteed.

The solution? Tell non-cyclists you paid $499.99 for your bike, no matter how much you really paid for it. This number has been scientifically formulated to sound like more than a non-cyclist would pay for a bike, without otherwise drawing attention to itself.

No matter how you try, you can't always avoid non-cyclists. All you can hope to do is minimize contact with them - so you can get back to what's important.

And I think we both know what that is.

Elden "Fatty" Nelson blogs as The Fat Cyclist, where he says ridiculous things about bikes, biking, and bikers on a daily basis. Oh, and sometimes he gives stuff away, too. So that's something.

H2V ride a huge success!
[September 17, 2007]

The ride finally took place! and man was it ever great!

Thanks to the efforts of so many people in our area we were able to raise 3500$! We were very proud to be able to present that cheque to the H2V group! Without the help of all of you, this never would have been possible…thank you!

Our group (22 riders in all) met the H2V group and left Moncton at the predicted time of 5pm. we averaged 31-32 km/h for the entire trip (172km in total) and got the H2V rider in the heart of Fredericton at around 10h30pm (ahead of schedule!). This was possible thanks to a great group of cyclist who came out and also some perfect weather conditions…couldn’t of asked for a better day really

You can view some pics of the event at this site

Event pics 1
Event pics 2

During and since the event all we got was positive feedback… extremely fun ride, I’m happy I was able to take part in this event!

I would like to thank all the people who volunteered their time and money for this important cause.

  • The riders who came (and paid) to "suffer" for over 5 hours in order to help the H2V group.

  • The people who sat in a car for almost 6 hours ensuring we were safe during the ride

  • All the friends and family and friends who donated time and money to help us collect 3500$!

  • Our club sponsors (Mike’s Bike Shop , Giant ,Vega, Pump House, Red Bull,FalStaff media, Gu, Home Depot, Powerbar, Atlantic Cycling Center to name a few) who as always, stepped up to the plate and gave very generously!

  • And let’s not forget to thank the guy who organised all his… Michael Leblanc… very well organised ride/event. Thanks to that every thing went off without a hitch (things we could control anyway! ),. Thanks Mike!

  • and lastly, the H2V group… it is because of their ambitious dream that we were able to participate in this!

if I forgot someone...sorry...still tired from the ride :)

This truly was an epic ride/event, one I will not forget for a long time, and it would not have been possible without all of you…so once again, a BIG THANKS to all of you for your help!

Pablo

P.S. you can continue to follow the H2V riders on their site in the GPS section

2007 Mike’s Bike Shop Series, BMX
[September 14, 2007]
Next Tuesday will see the 2007 Mike’s Bike Shop Series resume with the BMX stages. The MBS series will be the first one to make an official stop on the brand new Dieppe BMX track for two weeks in a row (September 18 and 25). Alain Goguen will put his leader’s jersey on the line in the remaining events of the season (including 4 cyclo-cross evenings).

The format for the BMX event will be based on time trial starts. Each rider will have three starts; a first position will mean 1 point, second, 2, third 3, and etc. At the conclusion of the evening, the rider with the least number of points will be declare the winner of this first ever BMX race on this new track. Once again, top riders will be handicapped before the start of the races. Everyone over the age of 20 is guaranteed a huge bonus! ;o)

If this format goes well, we might add a few items to week 2. We’re getting a roller compactor tomorrow and will make the track look like new! The start hill will also be done.

We have bikes and full face helmets to lend to participants. Everyone is asked to dress with full pants, long sleeve jersey and full gloves. Race will start at 6:00 pm. Still 5$ to register and part of it goes directly to charity!

Track Nationals were a hit thanks to all of you
[September 11, 2007]
great work all!
A message from the Centre regarding this past weekend,

Well, some 36 hours have past since the conclusion of the 2007 Tim Hortons National track championships, and the feeling gets more and more positive regarding the event. I’ve received many congratulations messages, and these are always welcomed when you’re as tired as I am at the moment. The only challenge I have, is the fact those messages should not come to me, but to all volunteers, officials, coaches, athletes, city workers, etc. who helped make this event a success.

We have yet to cumulate all those hours worked by the volunteers, but I can already confirm they were priceless. Without the help of the volunteers, mainly from the Mike’s Bike Shop Club, it would be impossible for us to old such event. Some people even took days off work to come and help us in any way possible. To them, we say a huge THANK YOU!

Thank you to our sponsors and partners as well. Without their support, the National Cycling Centre – Atlantic Canada would not exist, so needless to say their importance in regards to this event. A special thanks to the City and Park staff for helping us with the venue preparation and clean up. Their work too often goes without notice; this is how it happens when it’s well done!

Finally, a great thank you to the athletes. They were the reason all the above mentioned worked so hard. The show you guys put on was awesome and you were seen as real professionals of the sport.

From the staff of the National Cycling Centre and the Caisse populaire Dieppe Vélodrome, thank you and hope to see you all in the future,

Luc, Craig, Sheila, Sacha and Andrew.

Come and pre-ride the Hillsborough race course
[July 16, 2007]
Come and pre-ride the Hillsborough race course with the Mikes Bike Shop Cycling Club…

When: Saturday July 21 – 10:00AM (rain date – Monday July 23 6:30PM)
Why: Learn the race route from Veteran racers
Who: Any cycling enthusiast that has ridden single track in the local parks. Children/Youth under 16 should be accompanied by an Adult.

FAQ:

Did you know? It is no longer $50 to try racing. Due to changes at Velo NB, and MBS Cycling Club’s commitment to getting new people in the sport, you can try racing for $10.
Not sure where Hillsborough is ? Meet at Point Park Petro Canada for 9:15 AM (9:30 departure) to follow the caravan.
Am I ready for single track? If your not sure, get yourself out to one of the local parks (Rotary in Dieppe, Centennial Park, Mapleton Park) and try riding the single track trails. If you can ride those, we can help you get ready for the elevation changes of Hillsborough!
I heard the course is technical. Yes it is, however, the morning course is shortened with some of the toughest sections removed. We will ride it first, then if time, also ride the full course.
What will be covered? Mostly will just ride the course, and stop at the start of each technical section. Discuss and regroup at the bottom.
What if I’m too fast for the group, do I need to wait? No, if your more advanced and want to move at a faster pace, you can. The FULL course is marked. Also, we may be able to split up the group depending how many MBS Club members we have.
Rain Date? If it’s too miserable, will use the rain date. Decision will be made by 8AM on July 21. Check website for cancellation (rides section) or call 866-5384 if unsure,

New look, same great taste!
[July 10, 2007]
As you can see , I’ve updated the look of the site.
I’ve also changed some of the functionality.. removed some dead links, etc.
One notable and very important change is to the RIDES forum.

Now, when you post , you will be given a unique ID that you must use in order to edit your post after you have submitted.
If you submit a post and made a mistake in one of the fields you can now edit that ride via the EDIT the ride link. (Provided you have the edit ID for that ride)
I ask that you please use this feature and NOT re-post as that creates too many unwanted emails to all members,

Another addition is the next race section visible from the main page. I’ve put in a database all the know events for 2007. the 3 more recent events will show up in that window.
I may have forgotten certain events… I’ll get it right for 2008 ;)

The next section below it is the race reports . these reports are tales from some of our members regarding particular events they have gone to.
If you wish to contribute to these reports, please email me at th following address
Pablo@mbscycling.org
and I’ll do my best to post it on. I chose not to create a forum style for that section since I fear it would end filled with a lot of junk.. this way I can “edit” the reports if needed.

As you navigate through the new site, if you see any strange things, errors, or simply things that don’t make sense, please contact me so that I can make the changes to the site

Hope you enjoy the new layout and functionality

Don and Jeff's (and Ian) excellent adventures
[July 4, 2007]
well... while most of us enjoyed a nice rainy weekend here in Moncton, some of our club members set out on a nice Touring trip in Nova Scotia!
Don and Jeff (and later Ian) went for 3 days to tour our neighbor province on their heavily packed bikes

From talking to them, it seems they had a grand time

Don has posted a bunch of pics. Check them out:

Sheila Colbourne as Technical Director
[July 3, 2007]
(from Luc Arseneau, Head Coach of National Cycling Centre)

National Cycling Centre – Atlantic Canada and Velo NB combine efforts to name Sheila Colbourne as Technical Director

  • Date: July 3, 2007

  • From: Luc Arseneau

  • Publication:Immediate

Dieppe, NB (July 3rd, 2007) – It is with great pleasure the National Cycling Centre – Atlantic Canada announces Sheila Colbourne as its Technical Director. The creation of this position is due to the partnership with Velo NB. Sheila has a great background in the world of cycling and fits the two organizations’ philosophy very well.

“The Centre’s getting bigger and bigger every year and it’s important to have someone to take care of its administration and event management. By combining with our provincial organization, Velo NB, it enabled us both to create this full time position with the necessary benefits to get someone of Sheila’s quality;” comments Luc Arseneau, the Centre’s Head Coach.

Sheila Colbourne’s background in cycling is a very positive one. Along the years, she represented her home province, Newfoundland, at the Canada Games, she was chair of Bicycle Nova Scotia, and also worked as Technical Director with the Ontario Cycling Association.

For Velo NB, her experience will also be of major benefit: “Sheila has been active on the Atlantic cycling scene for some time. Her enthusiasm and professional qualifications and this partnership with the Centre promise great things for cycling in Atlantic Canada,” comments Kelly Murray, newly appointed chair of the association.
